Calgary at San Jose

Iginla takes goal total to 31 with overtime winner for Flames

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- For the second night in a row, Jarome Iginla came through with a pair of goals.

His score in overtime Thursday gave the Flames a 3-2 win over the San Jose Sharks, and was his 18th in 16 games, during which the Flames are 11-1-4.

"We definitely have had a good month of December and it's going good again," Iginla said. "As a team we're improving and finding ways to win close games and earlier in the year we weren't finding ways.

Iginla scored 3:26 into the overtime when he charged into a crowd and pushed the puck past Sharks goalie Evgeni Nabokov. It was Iginla's 31st goal of the season.

The night before, he scored twice in Calgary's 4-3 win over the New York Rangers.

In the first period Thursday, Iginla gave Calgary a 2-1 lead on a wrist shot at 16:26 after Kristian Huselius stole the puck from San Jose's Christian Ehrhoff as he tried to make a pass.

It was the Flames' fourth straight win and it snapped San Jose's four-game winning streak.

San Jose has second-worst home record in the NHL but owns the league's best road record.

"That stat has bothered a lot of people," said Nabokov. "But as long as you keep playing well and keep going. The home season will turn around."

Flames goalie Miikka Kiprusoff made 34 saves.

"I'm pretty tired," said Kiprusoff. "It's a pretty hot building to play in. They all seem to be tough games here but when you get two points you don't feel that."

Craig Rivet of the Sharks tied the game at 2 when he connected on a slap shot from the right side of the blue line with 6:06 remaining in the second. It was Rivet's third goal of the season.

"I can't complain about the effort or the game," Sharks' head coach Ron Wilson said. "We had so many guys hurting with the flu. But in the end we got a point and that really helped us in the standings."

Wilson, center Joe Pavelski and defenseman Matt Carle all missed Wednesday's practice with the flu.

The Sharks came back to tie the game 1-1 when rookie forward Torrey Mitchell scored his eighth goal of the season on a power play when he popped in a shot in front of Kiprusoff after grabbing a rebound from a slap shot by Jonathan Cheechoo with 15:57 remaining in the first period.

"Tonight San Jose played really well and outshot us and we found a way to hang in there and get an important road win which was really big for morale on a back-to-back night," Iginla said.

  • Iginla has 31 goals against the Sharks.
  • Nabokov has started 47 straight games since March 24.
  • The Sharks haven't won at home since Dec. 13 when they beat Vancouver, 5-2.
