New York at Boston

Bruins 4, Islanders 1 wire reports

BOSTON -- Boston rebounded from its worst loss of the season to finish a week of dominance against New York.

Marc Savard and Dennis Wideman each had a goal and an assist to lift the Boston Bruins to a 4-1 victory over the New York Islanders on Thursday night.

"We wanted this win big time," Savard said. "Obviously with the embarrassment of what happened in Montreal the guys played hard and no matter what happens tonight we are sitting in seventh."

The Bruins lost on Tuesday to Montreal 8-2 and fell to 0-6 against the Canadiens.

Against New York teams, though, Boston was perfect, having swept the Rangers in a home-and-home series last weekend.

Tim Thomas made 28 saves and Zdeno Chara added two assists for the Bruins, who have won four of six and headed into the All-Star break seeded seventh in the Eastern Conference.

"The Islanders were one point ahead of us going into the game," Thomas said. "It's a chance for us to feel good about ourselves during the break."

The Islanders lost for the first time in five road games but have dropped four of six going into the break.

"Guys were thinking about the break before it even started," Islanders coach Ted Nolan said. "It's hard not to be distracted. It's hard enough to win when you're not, never mind when you are."

Wideman and Lucic scored goals 52 seconds apart to give the Bruins a 2-0 lead with 9:40 remaining in the first period. Wideman sidestepped Islanders forward Trent Hunter and wristed a shot by goalie Rick DiPietro. Lucic took a feed from Chara along the boards and squeezed his shot by a bewildered DiPietro.

"We had to learn from the mistakes against Montreal and not dwell on them," Lucic said. "We wanted to get back to how we played against the Rangers."

Savard made it 3-0 when he scored from two feet in front of the goal line and beat DiPietro through the pads at 9:39 of the second period. He also assisted on Wideman's goal and has two goals and ten assists in seven games while leading the team with 56 points.

"I let in a bad third goal," DiPietro said. "We have a lot to prove. We show signs of being good, but at times we show signs of being bad."

Phil Kessel capped off the scoring for Boston when his shot trickled through DiPietro's pads and nudged over the goal line for Boston's second power-play goal of the game and a 4-0 lead with 2:40 remaining in the second.

Boston won the season series from the Islanders 3-1 while Thomas allowed only five goals.

Mike Sillinger scored for the Islanders when he beat Thomas inside the left post 6:45 into the third period.
