Early overtime goal from Pahlsson gets Ducks two points wire reports

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Samuel Pahlsson kept the Anaheim Ducks on a roll.

Pahlsson scored 32 seconds into overtime to lift the Anaheim Ducks to a 2-1 victory over the St. Louis Blues on Friday night, putting them just four points out of first place in the Pacific Division.

"It's big for us, we got two more points and those points are big for us," Pahlsson said. "It was a great pass, a backhand saucer across the crease. It was almost perfect.

Pahlsson swiped in Rob Niedermayer's pass from the right corner to lift the Ducks to their eighth win in nine games.

Anaheim had to rally after St. Louis forward Ryan Johnson had taken a pass from Lee Stempniak at the left circle and whisked a shot over the right shoulder of Anaheim goalie Jean-Sebastien Giguere to give the Blues a brief 1-0 lead 2:17 into the third period.

Just 1:58 later, Teemu Selanne deflected a slap shot by Mathieu Schneider past St. Louis goalie Manny Legace to draw the Ducks even and send the contest to overtime.

The goal was the third in nine games for Selanne since returning to the Ducks on February 5 after a four-month stretch while he considered retirement. He also scored in Anaheim's 3-2 win over Colorado on Wednesday.

The Ducks are 8-1 since Selanne returned.

"We are really playing our system very well, we're limiting other teams' chances," Ducks defenseman Mathieu Schneider said. "The cliche -- just get the pucks at the net and drive the net -- really pays off for us. We have a big grinding team and a lot of nights we have success wearing teams down."

The two teams skated through a 0-0 overtime deadlock in their last contest in St. Louis on February 1 with the Blues and Legace ultimately prevailing in the shootout against Giguere and the Ducks.

Giguere made 16 saves to improve to 7-0 with a tie in his last eight home games against the Blues.

After yielding four goals on 19 shots and being pulled from Thursday's 5-1 loss at Los Angeles in the second period, Legace responded with a 27-save effort.

"There is not a lot of room to skate and both teams were closing the ice up out there," Blues coach Andy Murray said. "We knew it was going to be a game where we had to play well defensively and that Manny would have to be good for us and he was."

The All-Star goalie has now played 19 consecutive games for St. Louis. Friday's loss was his first in his last 13 starts against the Ducks.

  • Current Duck and former Blues center Doug Weight remains sidelined with shoulder strain that has caused him to miss five games. He is still at least a week away from returning.
  • After losing two centers, Ryan Carter and Todd Marchant, to injuries in a 3-2 shootout win over Colorado on Wednesday, Andrew Ebbett made his NHL debut for the Ducks Friday, centering a line with Chris Kunitz on left wing and Teemu Selanne on his right. Ebbett has generated 54 points (13 goals, 42 assists) in 55 games with Portland of the AHL this season.
  • Carter fractured his wrist when he stuck his arm through the photographer's shooting hole in the glass. Marchant suffered a bruised shoulder.
