2020 NHL Playoffs Game 1 results: Blackhawks, Canadiens, Islanders, Canes and Flames all win in return

The NHL is finally back following a four-month hiatus because of the coronavirus pandemic. The sport's restart gets right into the thick of things, immediately jumping into the 2020 Stanley Cup Playoffs with an unprecedented 24 teams given a shot to lift Lord Stanley's Cup.

An unprecedented number of teams requires an unprecedented postseason format to go along with it. GOAL! This one is just about in the books. Andrew Mangiapane added an empty netter at 18:19 of the 3rd period. Calgary controlled the game throughout, as Winnipeg lost two of their top forwards. Partik Laine left the game after a Mark Giordano crosscheck to his right arm. No word on his status -- or that of Mark Scheifele -- going forward.

The Jets are on the power play just over two minutes into the third period. This is a huge opportunity for Winnipeg to get themselves back into the game

End of Second Period: Flames 3, Jets 1
The Flames got three special teams goals in the second period -- two on the power play, one shorthanded -- and are in complete control of the game. Calgary has outshot Winnipeg 27-13 through two, and has been the more physical team as well.

GOAL! Calgary gets another powerplay goal, this one from Mikael Backlund at 18:14 of the second period. Connor Hellebyuck is getting peppered, and much of it is coming after defensive breakdowns by the Jets. 3-1 Calgary leads, and they've had all of the momenta in this game since Scheifele hobbled off.

GOAL! Shorthanded Tobias Rieder at 12:51 after a bad neutral zone turnover, and now without Mark Scheifele the Jets could be in some trouble offensively, trying to get even in this game. 2-1 Calgary leads

GOAL! Johnny Gaudreau, on the power play st 7:06 of the second period. He nearly didn't corral the puck, but was able to slide it past Connor Hellebyuck for his fifth career Stanley Cup Playoffs goal. We're tied, 1-1

We are underway for the second period between Calgary and Winnipeg in Edmonton. The Jets lead 1-0, but the story is Mark Scheifele leaving the game early -- and having to be helped off the ice -- after Matthew Tkachuk delivered a big hit on Scheifele with a skate high, and appeared to clip Scheifele on the back of his leg. The Jets announced he would not return to the game.
