Andy Greene signs long-term extension with Devils
The New Jersey Devils signed defenseman Andy Greene to a long-term contract extension Wednesday.
The New Jersey Devils locked up defenseman Andy Greene with a long-term contract, the club announced Wednesday. Greene, who has spent his entire NHL career with the Devils since signing as an undrafted free agent, has one-year remaining on his current contract that came with a $3 million cap hit.
As is always the case, the Devils did not disclose the terms of the contract.
Greene enjoyed one of the most productive seasons of his eight-year career with the team with 32 points, including a career-high eight goals. He averaged 24:34 per game last season, nearly three full minutes more a game than his next closest teammate.
The 31-year-old defenseman has quietly built a terrific career in the NHL as a perfect fit in New Jersey’s defensively-angled system.
The Devils are routinely a strong possession team and Greene is routinely one of the team’s most effective players in that facet. His 56.3 Corsi for percentage was best among all defensemen on the team, despite the fact he was deployed primarily against top competition and saw most of his shifts start in the defensive zone.
After the club lost Mark Fayne in free agency, there's even more responsibility on Greene, who will turn 32 early next season, to carry the team defensively.
There is nothing really exciting of flashy about Greene, which is just how the Devils seem to like it. He is a great fit for the system and also provides some of the younger defensemen like Adam Larsson, Eric Gelinas and Jon Merrill, who likely will be thrust into more prominent roles next season, a strong defenseman to learn from. It was really no surprise to see the Devils and Greene make a mutual long-term commitment.
Over 477 games with the Devils, Greene has recorded 149 points.
