Athletes are used to preferential treatment, but one Pennsylvania DMV policy seems more peculiar than normal.

On Friday, Penguins star Sidney Crosby visited a local DMV in a Pittsburgh suburb in an attempt to renew his driver’s license. Sid, however, wasn’t subjected to the same slow, aggravating process that the rest of us are used to – you know, the endless hours spent on those uncomfortable dark blue chairs, hesitant to go to the bathroom for fear of missing our turn.

Instead, Crosby’s visit was expedited due to a policy where celebrities can leapfrog the line in order to avoid the expected crush of autograph-seekers or picture requests.

“If they walk in and the place goes crazy with fans, we would just move them in and out,” a DMV spokeswoman said to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. “It’s a matter of keeping control and keeping disruptions to a minimum.”

The DMV’s thinking is that the chaos surrounding a “trapped” celebrity may actually increase the wait for hopeful drivers.

Agents or representatives of celebrities owning Crosby-like-status can actually call ahead to schedule an appointment and bypass the commotion, the spokeswoman said.

Given the pathetic number of attempts it took me to get my driver’s license, I’d probably opt for this perk over the money and the fame.
