Canada 2-1 favorite to win hockey gold in Sochi, USA has 6-1 odds
Canada is the lone favorite to win gold in hockey at the Sochi Games, being set as a 2-1 favorite ahead of the Russians. USA has the fourth-best odds at 6-1.
The last time we saw the odds for the men's hockey tournament at the Winter Olympics, it was before the rosters had been announced. At that time, Canada and Russia were listed as co-favorites to win gold at 11-5.
Now that we all know what the actual rosters are going to look like, it's time to update the odds issued by the site Bovada. Let's just get right into the odds to take home the gold medal in Sochi, shall we?
Canada -- 2-1
Russia -- 9-4
Sweden -- 4-1
USA -- 6-1
Czech Republic -- 10-1
Finland -- 10-1
Switzerland -- 25-1
Slovakia -- 33-1
Norway -- 200-1
Latvia -- 400-1
Austria -- 1,000-1
Slovenia -- 1,000-1
In what should come as little surprise, Canada is now the lone favorite to win gold, though it's but the slimmest of margains over the Russians with their home-ice advantage. All you have to do is look at Canada's list of players that didn't make the team and you can understand what they are favored to repeat as the champs.
The Americans, meanwhile, check in with the fourth best odds, which seems about right. They are absolutely a contender not only for a medal but for gold but Sweden is an awfully good looking team on paper and perhaps is almost even a little low at 4-1. Home ice or not, I'd like the Swedes over the Russians partly because they have a better roster but also because the home-ice advantage might not be so advantageous with all of the pressure that country will face to win gold.
It is kind of surprising to see Finland with odds at 10-1, same as the Czechs. With Tuukka Rask, Kari Lehtonen and Antti Niemi all as options in net, the Finns could be scary good simply because they'll be tough to score on.
As far as the odds to win each pool, Russia, Canada and Sweden are the tops there as well, each favored to win their respective pools.
The Olympics start Feb. 7 but the hockey won't start until Feb. 13. That day can't get here soon enough.
