Dmitry Orlov suspended two games for boarding Brayden Schenn
Capitals defenseman Dmitry Orlov has been suspended for two games after boarding Brayden Schenn. The hit came after Orlov scored twice for the Caps.
Orlov was given a five-minute major penalty in the game and a misconduct. His hit on Schenn came just seconds after Schenn hit Orlov into the boards and seemed to be retalliatory in nature. In making the hit, Orlov jumped off the ice and hit Schenn from behind, an easy call for any official to make.
It quickly put a damper on what was looking like a career day for Orlov. He scored two goals to help the Caps to a 4-2 lead with 10 minutes to go but his penalty changed that. Philadelphia scored on the ensuing power play and would eventually finish their comeback in overtime for a 5-4 win.
Schenn was OK and did finish the game so that worked in Orlov's favor. Further helping him was the fact that he has no supplemental discipline history. That's good for him because this punishment could have easily been much worse, it was a terrible hit. There's no debating that Orlov was well off the ice with both skates prior to the hit.
As a result of the suspension, Orlov was also fined $7,076.92 for two games' salary.
