After a lot of speculation they might trade it, the Carolina Hurricanes kept the fifth overall pick in the 2013 NHL Draft and used it Sunday to select Elias Lindholm.

The Canes were the team in the top five pegged as most likely to trade their pick. They took almost their entire allotment of time before strolling up to the podium to select Lindholm, apparently waiting for an offer that didn't come their way.

Lindholm comes to Carolina from Sweden, where the centerman was one of the highest-ranked players in a deep class. He was ranked No. 6 on Chris Peters' Big Board. Here is tge scouting report from Peters:

He plays the game at a level beyond his years and shows such tremendous upside at the center position. Lindholm has good two-way instincts and some projectable puck skills that show he could produce at a decent clip in the NHL.

Lindholm will likely remain in Sweden for another year before coming over to the US to play for the Hurricanes.
