GIF: Brad Marchand misses wide-open net from three feet away
Brad Marchand missed hockey's version of a gimme putt with the score tied midway through the period. It's not often you see a miss quite this spectacular.
Brad Marchand is not going to sleep well tonight. The Boston Bruins' agitating forward has had some golden opportunities to score in Game 4, but none better than the one he had midway through the third period.
With the game tied 2-2 and the Bruins buzzing for much of the period, Marchand found himself alone in front of the net. He also found the net to be wide open as Red Wings netminder Jonas Gustavsson apparently missed the fact that the puck coming at him was a pass and not a shot. He was no where near in position to stop Marchand.
From about three feet away from the net, Marchand had nothing but air between him and giving the Bruins the lead. And air was all he got. In one fluid motion, Marchand let the puck go, it missed the far post by a few inches and kept the score tied.

When he returned to the bench, Marchand got a lot of pats on the back to say, “It’s OK, Sport. You’ll get ‘em next time.”
That was next time, though. Marchand missed a similarly open net with a shot in the first period. Marchand has no goals through four games in the first-round series, a goose egg that looms a lot larger after a miss of that magnitude.
Game 4 went to overtime, too. That is going to sting for a while.
