The Springfield Falcons and Adirondack Phantoms started an American Hockey League game on Feb. 17 and ended it March 1 in thrilling fashion.

The Feb. 17 matchup between Springfield, AHL affiliate of the Columbus Blue Jackets, and Philadelphia Flyers affiliate Adirondack was suspended with 3:42 remaining in the second period after Springfield forward Wade MacLeod suffered a seizure on the ice. MacLeod’s story took another scary turn when it was later revealed by his family that the Blue Jackets prospect had a benign mass on his brain.

Considering the circumstances, it was absolutely the right decision to suspend the game, but it still had to be completed.

With Springfield and Adirondack already scheduled to play Friday, both teams agreed to complete the suspended game immediately prior to the regularly-scheduled tilt. So it was basically a modified doubleheader, believed to be the first of its kind, at the MassMutual Center in Springfield.

With Adirondack leading 2-1, the game resumed with 3:42 to play in the second period at 6:05 p.m. Friday. Scott Howes scored for Springfield in the continuation game to tie the score. After nearly two weeks, the game needed a shootout to be decided.

That's when Jonathan Audy-Marchessault did this:

When the goalie wants to attack the guy who scored, you know it was nasty.

Audy-Marchessault was the only player to score in the five-round shootout, giving the Falcons a 3-2 win.

Springfield couldn’t celebrate for long. The new game started at 7:37 p.m.
