Tampa Bay Lightning captain Steven Stamkos may not be one of the most famous athletes in the U.S., but his eligibility for unrestricted free agency this summer makes him a big-time attraction in Canada. He’s the guy everyone wants to talk to before and after games north of the border and some are interested what he’s up to off the ice, too.

While preparing for Tampa’s game against the Montreal Canadiens on the road Tuesday, Stamkos noticed that he was being followed. It's not something that usually happens to hockey players, so he was a bit unsettled by the whole thing. Stamkos then decided to share his uneasiness with his 405,000 Twitter followers and creep everyone else out, too.

Yikes. Maybe it’s a paparazzo or an over-eager fan trying to get a glimpse of Stamkos out among real people. It’s not necessarily uncommon for players to attract extra attention in Montreal or Toronto, but as Stamkos says, this was indeed creepy.

UPDATE: It appears French-language hockey gossip blog 25Stanley.com is behind the photographer stalking. Here's the other side of the masked man's camera. Yeah, still creepy.

Montreal is one of the rumored potential landing spots for Stamkos should he reach free agency this summer. He remains unsigned, but continues negotiating a new deal with the Lightning through his agents. If they don’t get a deal done before the season is over, though, Stamkos can expect a lot more people following his every move.
