The NHL Daily Fix is your morning wakeup call with news and notes for the day's hockey action.

Morning Buzz

David Clarkson probably doesn't have a future in retail after his NHL career. Or acting. And he certainly doesn't like anything that might be seen as being affiliated with the Rangers.

Seriously, awful local commercials with hockey players are just the best.

This is it (again) for the Phoenix Coyotes. Judgment Day. Or Deadline Day. Whichever news telecast dramatic title that you want to give it is fine. Greg Jamison has until midnight Thursday to purchase the team from the NHL under the current lease agreement with the city of Glendale, or it's going bye bye. The new mayor has made it known that he does not like the deal as it stands, and it would certainly be made a lot less team friendly.

As for Jamison? It's looking more and more like he won't get the money to buy the team.

Former San Jose Sharks CEO Greg Jamison, the main suitor for the Phoenix Coyotes for the past year, cannot produce the capital needed to purchase the team from the NHL and as a result a Jan. 31 deadline to maintain a critical lease agreement with the City of Glendale will pass without a deal being completed, multiple sources have told ESPN.com.

A separate group of investors is prepared to step into the void created by Jamison's failure to produce the money he repeatedly insisted he would deliver to complete the deal, but the question is whether Glendale officials will agree to extend the lease agreement to a new group given that it was Jamison who negotiated the terms of the highly contentious lease deal. (ESPN.com)

Things don't look so good right now for the Avalanche, but Adrian Dater thinks they don't see it at all and that might hurt the team even more. Denial is no good. (Denver Post)

Somebody who is not in denial is Capitals owner Ted Leonsis. He stated flatly this week that his captain, Alex Ovechkin, "needs to play better." (Washington Post)

Odd story of the day: An OHL referee has been suspended for the rest of the season for a tweet that he made after officiating a game in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. "Soo Saint Marie, two words, Slim Pickens. #noteeth #hicktown, #allfaties."

Huh, who would have thought that tweet would be a bad idea? (CSN Washington)
