Penguins F Marcel Goc out three weeks with foot injury
Marcel Goc will miss the next three weeks with a foot injury, putting another dent in Pittsburgh's already weakened depth.
Did the Pittsburgh Penguins collectively walk under a ladder or break a mirror? Did a black cat cross the team bus’ path? Whatever the issue, the Pens are getting absolutely no luck when it comes to staying healthy. The team revealed Friday that forward Marcel Goc, a deadline acquisition to bring depth to Pittsburgh’s lineup, will miss the next three weeks with a foot injury.
He joins Evgeni Malkin on the shelf with a foot ailment. Additionally, the Pens already have Paul Martin, Kris Letang, Chris Conner and Pascal Dupuis on injured reserve.
This has been the story all season and for the last few years for the Pens, but these injury woes are starting to get out of control. Not only that, but the Penguins are backsliding into the postseason at this point.
The club has lost six of its last eight which includes the three-game losing streak the Pens are currently on.
Goc has just two assists in 12 games since joining the Penguins via trade from the Florida Panthers. Based on this timeline, Goc won’t be available until at least the start of the playoffs and could miss a few games in the first round.
Pittsburgh’s depth was already a concern. That’s part of why they went out to acquire Goc. His loss isn’t as devastating as not having Malkin, obviously, but it is certainly not ideal for a team that needs to get something positive going.
It wasn’t all bad news, though, on Friday. Former first-round pick Beau Bennett will return to the Penguins lineup for the first time since November Friday night against Columbus. With all that time off, it’s unclear how effective the 22-year-old forward will be, but he should add something to the weakened lineup.
