Red Wings' Daniel Alfredsson to miss Game 3 vs. Bruins
Daniel Alfredsson is expected to miss Game 3 as he deals with an ailing back. Joakim Andersson will draw into the lineup as his replacement.
Andersson says he's playing tonight with Helm and Jurco; Alfie is out (upper-body) #RedWings— Detroit Red Wings (@DetroitRedWings) April 22, 2014
It sounds like upper-body could be referring to the ailing back Alfredsson has been dealing with throughout the year.
Knowing that, it could explain why Alfredsson has been relatively ineffective through two games in this first-round playoff series. He saw his ice time increase in Game 2 by nearly five minutes, but has yet to register a shot on goal.
Giving Alfredsson a chance to rest his back and try and gear up for what could be a long series may be the best strategy for the Red Wings at this point.
The good news is, they can go to Andersson, who already has some playoff experience under his belt, to take Alfredsson’s spot in the lineup.
Andersson appeared in 65 games this season with Detroit, registering 17 points including eight goals. In 14 postseason contests last year, Andersson registered five points and 19 shots on goal. The 25-year-old Swede offers more size and speed as well.
