If the NHL enters its third lockout in the past 18 years next week the league's top executives, including commissioner Gary Bettman and deputy commission Bill Daly, will not receive a paycheck during the work stoppage according to a report from Chris Johnston of the Canadian Press.

The two sides have not met this week after talks broke off last Friday, though Johnston also reports the two sides could meet as early as Friday. They have until September 15 to complete a deal before the NHL officially enters yet another work stoppage.

Donald Fehr, the head of the NHL Players Association, has not received a salary since July 1.

While neither Bettman or Daly confirmed on the record that they will stop being paid, Daly told Johnston that “the assumption that high-ranking league executives will continue to receive a salary during a lockout is not necessarily accurate.”

The NHL's top executives still received paychecks during the lockout that cancelled the entire 2004-05 season.

Back in August it was reported that Bettman made nearly $8 million during the 2011-12 season.

The last time the NHL and NHLPA had formal talks the players made a counter proposal to the league. It was not well received and talks broke off soon after with Bettman calling it a "disappointing ending to a promising week."

Earlier in the weke the league had made a proposal of its own to the players that would have included a $58 million salary cap during the 2012-13 season.
