You can take one defenseman off the potential free-agent market; Ron Hainsey is staying in Carolina.

Signed prior to last season for a cheap deal, Hainsey had a good season for the Hurricanes, having a positive impact on games whenever he was on the ice in terms of possession. It was a good enough campaign to earn him a three-year extension with the Hurricanes on Tuesday.

The details, which the Hurricanes readily share, are as follows: Hainsey, 32, will receive $3 million in 2014-15 and 15-16 then $2.5 million in 2016-17, brining his annual average value (cap hit) to $2.83 million.

That's a pretty good looking deal and probably for less than Hainsey might have fetched had he tested the market again. Not known for his offensve, Hainsey produced 15 points including four goals last season for Carolina while blocking 124 shots and being one of their top-four defensemen in terms of minutes and usage. At his price, that's a very fair deal.

Between this deal and hiring Bill Peters as the new head coach, the Ron Francis era in Carolina is getting off to a pretty nice start.
