VIDEO: Alex Ovechkin scores 50th, earns fifth 50-goal season of career
Alex Ovechkin scored in St. Louis on Tuesday, giving him his 50th goal of the season. It's the fifth time in his career he's hit 50 goals.
There has been little doubt that Washington Capitals star Alex Ovechkin will win the Rocket Richard Trophy this season as the NHL's leading goal scorer, the question was how high could he go and would he hit 50?
The answer to the latter is yes. Ovechkin hit the 50-goal plateau for the fifth time in his career on Tuesday night in St. Louis. It came, how else, but on the power play.
It's fitting his 50th came on the power play considering it was the 23rd time this season he scored on the man advantage. He has really found his niche on the power play the past couple of seasons by parking in the left faceoff circle and firing home one-timers, just as he did to Ryan Miller.
Say what you will about Ovechkin's game this season and his awful minus-35 this season but 50 goals are 50 goals and not many get there in today's game, nor do many do it as often as Ovechkin has already. He's in some awfully select company now.
