VIDEO: Antti Niemi's shootout save baffles Todd Bertuzzi
It's not often you'll see a save-of-the-year candidate come from the shootout, but Antti Niemi's stop on Todd Bertuzzi's attempt is one for the ages.
The San Jose Sharks might lead the NHL in goals scored, but they also have a Vezina-caliber goaltender in Antti Niemi, who has been a bit undersold amid his team’s hot start. That should probably change after what he did to Todd Bertuzzi of the Red Wings Monday night during a shootout.
After Logan Couture scored on a pretty shootout attempt, the pressure was on Bertuzzi to score or the game was over. He came in on Niemi, made a nice move and then ...
Bertuzzi had almost the whole of the net to shoot at with Niemi down and out. Bertuzzi calmly fired a shot hoping to get it over the sprawling Niemi. In a last-ditch effort, Niemi stuck up his leg pad at the last minute and made the incredible stop, sealing another win for the red-hot Sharks.
The big Red Wings forward was quite clearly baffled by what Niemi did, throwing his gloved hand in the air as if to ask, “Why? How?" Happens to the best of 'em, Todd.
It’s one of the finest saves you’ll see in a shootout, where it’s difficult for the goaltender to get terribly flashy. The shootout is pretty much designed for goal scoring and entertainment, so when a goalie can do something like that, it’s extra special.
This one is going to be played on all the highlight reels this year. What an incredible stop.
