VIDEO: Darren Helm scores goal, flips over Islanders goalie
Red Wings forward Darren Helm scored a goal, then spectacularly collided with Islanders defenseman Andrew MacDonald and goalie Kevin Poulin.
Perhaps you’ve seen Bobby Orr’s famous goal in the 1970 Stanley Cup Final where he goes flying through the air? Detroit Red Wings forward Darren Helm had a similar experience, but this was like the explosion-filled, Michael Bay-directed version.
With the Red Wings shorthanded in the second period, Helm took off for a loose puck. Charging for that same puck was Islanders goaltender Kevin Poulin. Also charging back on the backcheck was New York defenseman Andrew MacDonald.
All three ended up at the same place at the same time and the result was a high-speed collision and a Red Wings goal.
Helm got a piece of the puck to tap it through Poulin and into the net. The Red Wings forward then flipped over Poulin, who fanned on his poke-check attempt. So did MacDonald who landed right on his backside with his legs in the air.
It was a spectacular collision that was only missing the fireball.
The goal was Helm’s second of the game and gave the Red Wings a 2-0 lead at that point.
