VIDEO: Hardly anybody in Ottawa knows Bobby Ryan
Bobby Ryan is a new Senator but the people of Ottawa wouldn't recognize him if he were standing right there. He found that out.
You hear all the time about Canadian cities being hockey crazy and how much people live and die not only for their favorite teams but for the game in general. So you'd think a guy like Bobby Ryan who was traded to Ottawa earlier this summer and has made the media rounds would be recognizeable to the folks in his new city.
You'd think that anyway.
So pretty much nobody recognized Ryan on the streets of Ottawa except for a couple of ladies. And who says only guys know sports?
Senators fans might not know much about Ryan now but they should soon enough. As one fan who knows OF Ryan so astutely pointed out, a line with Ryan and Jason Spezza should be pretty spectacular, though even Ryan was taken aback by a suggestion that he could score 50 goals.
It's all in good fun but it also does somewhat dispel the myths about Canadians and their obsession with all things hockey. I mean I know Ryan is an American and spent his whole career up until now playing on the West Coast but the guy has been an All-Star, a star at the NHL Awards ceremonies in his skits with Ryan Getzlaf and has been a consistent 30-goal guy.
Until he makes them all fans on the ice he might consider wearing a nametag.
