VIDEO: Jeff Carter beats first-period buzzer to give Kings lead
Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Final was one second away from being tied after one period but Jeff Carter just beat the buzzer to give the Kings a lead for the first time in this series.
The Kings just finished killing a minor penalty to Willie Mitchell in a quick-paced but scoreless first period. The penalty to Mitchell expired with just 18 seconds to go in the period and with the puck in the neutral zone, it looked like it was going to stay scoreless for intermission.
Enter Carter and his wicked wristers. Carter took a feed from -- who else -- Justin Williams in one final rush and found himself with some space and just a little time in the slot. He had Henrik Lundqvist leaning one way and he shot the other, getting the puck to deflect off the Rangers goalie and in.
The clock showed 0:00 but upon review it indeed did stand; Carter scored with 0.7 seconds remaining in the period. What a crushing end to the first 20 for the Rangers and the MSG faithful. Not only that but it gave the Kings a lead for the first time in this Stanley Cup Final despite them being up in the series 2-0.
For Carter it was his 10th goal of these playoffs and 24th point overall as he continues to make a very strong case for the Conn Smythe Trophy.
