VIDEO: John Tortorella with a passionate defense of Brad Richards
Rangers coach John Tortorella wants everybody to know he is not blaming Brad Richards for their situation. And he was very passionate about it.
The New York Rangers made high-priced center Brad Richards a healthy scratch on Thursday night for Game 4 of their series against the Boston Bruins, and coach John Tortorella wanted to make something very clear after their overtime win -- he didn't make the move because he was blaming Richards for the Rangers' situation.
The money lines: "So none of you, don't put words in my mouth. It's not blaming Brad Richards, I've already heard enough of that crap already as far as this is concerned. He's a hell of a hockey player that's having a hell of a time. I need to make decisions for what I feel is right for the team to win tonight's game, and that's why I make that decision. This is a Conn Smythe winner, a guy I've grown up with, a guy that I love -- as a person and a player. But I have to make that decision regarding this. So kiss my ass if you want to write something different. It's not about blaming that guy and I don't want anybody to pile on him. This is my decision and I make it for the hockey club."
And that's why John Tortorella's press conference are still must-see in the playoffs, whether they're 30 seconds long or seven minutes.
