The visual certainly didn’t look great for Montreal Canadiens forward Max Pacioretty. After driving hard to the net, the big winger was ridden into the Carolina Hurricanes’ net by defenseman Brett Bellemore.  Pacioretty hit the net with some awful force and remained on the ice for several minutes.

He was tended to by medical personnel on the ice for some time before being taken to the dressing room. According to the Canadiens, Pacioretty will not return to the game with a lower-body injury.

Pacioretty is due to leave with Team USA for the 2014 Olympic Winter Games, but if he’s seriously hurt, his status could be in doubt. He had trouble skating off, but also took a good whack on his arm from the post.

UPDATE: Pacioretty told reporters after the game that he will be able to travel to Sochi, meaning the U.S. will likely be able to keep any backup plans on ice.

In the event anything else crops up, the U.S., and all teams in the Olympic men’s ice hockey tournament, have until two hours before the first game of the tournament on Feb. 12 to finalize their rosters. Once that is submitted, the roster is final and no changes can be made.
