VIDEO: Sabres voice Rick Jeanneret calls game between benches
Sabres play-by-play man Rick Jeanneret called Tuesday's game from between the benches after an elevator malfunction. He donned a mask and was nearly crushed.
In what can only be described as a perfect metaphor for the Buffalo Sabres' season, their legendary play-by-play voice Rick Jeanneret was announcing Tuesday night's game from between the benches because the elevator at First Niagra Center couldn't get off the ground floor.
The elevator that runs to the press box was down earlier in the day in Buffalo's building and at the time Jeanneret joked that he would just have to do the game from between the benches. It didn't take long for the joke to become reality.
When the game began, there was Jeanneret next to Rob Ray in the broadcaster's section between the benches, protective mask and all.
The sight was such a novelty that apparently the players couldn't help themselves. At one point the Kings' Jordan Nolan came by for a visit. OK not really. Nolan instead nearly crushed Jeanneret in between the benches after a check.
Making matters even better, while the Sabres broadcast was showing that replay, some player took the opportunity during a break in the action to say hi to RJ.
Jeanerret has been calling Sabres games since 1971-72 and is the longest-tenured play-by-play man in NHL history. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame after receiving the Foster Hewitt Memorial Award in 2012.
He probably didn't call many games like the one he saw on Tuesday night, though.
