When children set out to learn how to play hockey, actually playing the game while trying to ice skate can be daunting enough. It becomes even more daunting when kids hit the ice and play on a sheet the same size as an NHL rink.

The ice is so large and the space so plentiful, it's not always conducive to learning the game and having fun, this is why USA Hockey has been behind a push to play on smaller surfaces at the early ages.

To help demonstrate how tough it is for your average 8-year-old to play on the full-size ice, a to-scale sheet of ice was made for the grown-ups to play on, including oversized goal cages. The message seemed to get through.

It's pretty neat to see the view put into scale for the little guys but also makes it clear that the sheet should match the size. We need more American kids to come up and lead the USA past Canada in 2028.
