VIDEO: Watch former Red Wings stars join rec-leaguers for game
Former Red Wings Kirk Maltby, Kris Draper, Chris Osgood and Larry Murphy joined two rec-league teams for a game and a thrill of a lifetime.
Imagine showing up for your regular weeknight game of hockey at the local rink. Then imagine a few new teammates show up who happen to be former Red Wings Kris Draper, Kirk Maltby, Chris Osgood and Larry Murphy.
That's precisely what happened recently in Michigan when the four former Wings showed up to be "Legendary Linemates" of two rec-league teams, giving some players the thrill of their hockey lifetimes. How often can rec-league players say they played a game with/against a Hockey Hall of Famer like Murphy? Not many, that's for sure.
Osgood didn't put on the goalie pads because that probably would have been a little unfair, but then again it might have been unfair to his team that he was skating out. Osgood partnered with one of the regular team members on defense and turned in a minus-5. In one game. That's not very good.
The scene was made possible by Budweiser in what I can only assume is a clever ad campaign. Say what you will about Bud and its products, but it does some really awesome marketing in hockey. They're doing their part to put the beer in beer league.
It will be awesome to see if this happens in a bunch of other cities as well. What a cool scene.
