It's tough being a referee.

Everybody in the building already hates you because they think you're out to get their favorite team. Players and coaches spend the entire game screaming at you. And sometimes you just get in the way and mess up the game.

That was referee Tim Peel in the first period of Friday's Detroit Red Wings-Vancouver Canucks game at Joe Louis Arena on Friday night.

As Canucks forward Derek Dorsett was skating into the Detroit zone with the puck, Red Wings defenseman Brendan Smith was trying to chase him down and take away his shooting lane when all of a sudden there was Peel right in the middle of things.

Peel is one of the most criticized refs in the league, and he probably didn't want any friends in Vancouver after that.
