  • Hurricanes' Jordan Staal: Out due to family issue

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(2/23/18) Staal will not play in Friday's game against the Penguins for personal/family reasons.

Staal's absence Friday explains Lucas Wallmark's promotion from AHL Charlotte earlier in the day. Without Staal available, the Hurricanes will have to shuffle either Wallmark or Josh Jooris into the lineup and make necessary adjustments to the power play. Given the quick turnaround, It wouldn't be surprising if the veteran pivot is also unavailable for the first contest upon a three-game road trip that begins in Detroit on Saturday.

Hurricanes' Jordan Staal: Notches lone assist in blowout win

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(2/14/18) Staal recorded an even-strength assist on three shots and 19:53 of ice time in Tuesday's 7-3 win over the Kings.

Fantasy owners were no doubt hoping for more from the Canes' top center given the lopsided score, but the single-point effort only serves to underscore Staal's season thus far, which has been steady, if unspectacular. Now with 34 points through 57 games, the 29-year-old Staal is once again on pace for a 50-point season, something he has fallen just shy of the past two seasons. He remains a fairly dependable fantasy asset in deeper formats.

Hurricanes' Jordan Staal: Playing well at the break

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(1/27/18) Staal tallied four goals and four assists in the 10 games leading up to the All-Star break.

This recent hot streak has given Staal 14 goals and 16 assists through 49 games. It's worth noting that six of the 29-year-old's points in the last 10 contests were with the extra man. Staal already has 11 power-play points, which is a career high.

Hurricanes' Jordan Staal: Notches two power-play points in loss

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(1/13/18) Staal scored a goal and added an assist -- both with the man advantage -- during Friday's 4-3 loss to Washington.

While this was Staal's first multi-point showing since Dec. 5, he did improve his point streak to five games (three goals and three assists). The veteran is locked into a top offensive role, and he's currently on pace to post career-high marks in both the goal and point columns. Staal should continue to be viewed as a solid supporting piece in the majority of settings.

Hurricanes' Jordan Staal: Points in four straight games

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(1/12/18) Staal extended his point streak to four games with a shorthanded goal in Thursday's 3-1 win against the Capitals.

Now with 26 points in 43 games, Staal has put himself in a good position to crack the 50-point plateau this season, something he hasn't done since 2011-12 -- his last season in Pittsburgh. He continues to center the Canes' top line between Sebastian Aho and Elias Lindholm, giving him decent fantasy value in most formats.
