Garbutt agreed to terms on a one-year deal with KHL Sochi on Wednesday, Igor Eronko of Sport-Express reports.
Garbutt split time between the NHL and AHL this season, as he played in 27 contests for the Ducks, collecting a pair of goals and one assist. In his career, the winger has 305 NHL games under his belt, with 87 points and 283 PIM to show for it. The 31-year-old will now head overseas in order to extend his playing career.
Garbutt was assigned to AHL San Diego on Saturday.
After clearing waivers, Garbutt will head to the minors where he will look to get more playing time than the 9:10 on average that the Ducks were giving him. The 31-year-old winger managed only three points and 26 shots on goal during this stint in Anaheim.
Garbutt was placed on waivers Thursday, Pierre LeBrun of ESPN.com reports.
Garbutt's placement on waivers is likely a procedural roster move, considering he has played in all 27 games for the Ducks this year. If he goes unclaimed, the winger can remain in the NHL, but he would be eligible to be sent down to the minors without having to be waived again in the future.
Garbutt scored his first goal of the season on his only shot on net during Thursday's game against Philadelphia.
Garbutt has averaged just 9:16 of ice time through the first five games of the season, which significantly limits his fantasy upside. And after posting a respectable campaign during the 2013-14 season (17 goals and 32 points with a plus-10 rating, 106 penalty minutes, 165 shots and 141 hits), the 31-year-old winger declined all the way down to seven goals and seven assists last year. He still owns value in leagues that include real-time statistics, but he's unlikely help enough offensively to be anything more than a low-end fantasy option.
Garbutt should be seeing an increase in ice time, reports the Orange County Register.
Coach Bruce Boudreau was quoted after Friday's game saying that he "was trying to figure out how [to] get [Garbutt] more ice time [since] he's playing really good." While he's currently averaging 10:20 of ice time this season, he's seen an average of 11:23 in his last six games. The increase in playing time should only serve to further boost what has been a nice fresh start for the 30-year-old. He's tallied four points in 15 games with the Ducks after tallying just six points in 43 games with the Blackhawks earlier this season.
Garbutt was acquired from the Blackhawks on Thursday.
Garbutt has struggled in his first season with the Blackhawks, tallying only six points in 43 contests. Originally brought in as part of the deal for Patrick Sharp, the 30-year-old never quite fit within Chicago's system. With just one goal in his last 25 outings, the winger will look to reset with the Ducks.
Garbutt scored just his second goal of the year Thursday, and it held up as the game-winner against the Canadiens.
Garbutt was a useful fantasy asset in PIM formats two years ago with Dallas, when he notched 17 goals, 15 assists, 106 PIM and a plus-10 rating, but he hasn't come close to that level of production since. This rare tally doesn't seem likely to change things for him, but hey, at least he got to play double-digit minutes for the first time in 10 games.
Garbutt (illness) returned to action Saturday against the Blues, putting one shot on net.
Garbutt saw just 9:01 of action in Saturday's contest, adding a hit to his shot on goal on what was a relatively quiet night for him overall. He should be back on the ice again Sunday against the Flames.
As expected, Garbutt (illness) won't suit up for Thursday's game against the Devils, Tracey Myers of CSN Chicago reports.
Garbutt has now missed back-to-back games due to illness. Andrew Shaw is expected to skate on the Hawks' first line in Garbutt's absence. The 30-year-old winger will hope to draw back into Chicago's lineup Saturday against the Blues.
Garbutt (illness) likely won't play Thursday against the Devils, Mark Lazerus of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.
Garbutt missed Sunday's game against Edmonton due to an illness, and likely won't play Thursday against New Jersey, as he hasn't been able to practice in any capacity leading up to the contest. If he is held out of Thursday's tilt, Andrew Shaw is expected to replace him on Chicago's top line.
Garbutt (illness) is hoping to be available for Thursday's tilt with New Jersey, Tracey Myers of CSN Chicago reports.
Garbutt missed out on Chicago's 4-2 victory Sunday as a game-time decision, meaning that unless a setback occurs, he should be ready to go Tuesday. Garbutt is still yet to score a goal this season, but with the skating ability and tenacity he possesses, it should only be a matter of time before he breaks his duck.
Garbutt (undisclosed) will not play in Sunday's game against the Oilers, CSN's Tracey Myers reports.
Garbutt had a shot to play Sunday, but he will be held out due to the unspecified injury he is dealing with. It's not clear when Garbutt will be ready to play again, but he will have a few days to rest and recover before the Blackhawks' next game Thursday.
Garbutt is questionable for Sunday's game against the Oilers with an undisclosed issue.
Garbutt saw just 11:28 of ice time Friday against Chicago, which may indicate he suffered an injury at some point in the contest. It's unclear at this point whether or not he'll play Sunday against the Oilers, but that should clear up as the teams take the ice for warmups.
Garbutt is healthy and will play Friday in New Jersey despite worry of a potential injury, Tracey Myers of CSN Chicago reports.
With Marian Hossa missing Friday's game, Garbutt is projected to play on the Blackhawks' first line with Jonathan Toews and Artemi Panarin, who are immensely talented in the offensive zone. Garbutt's skating ability will allow him to keep up in the rush and get to open ice, where his linemates have more than enough ability to set him up for high-quality chances. The former Brown captain knows how to finish as well, evidenced by his 17-goal haul in 2013-14.
Blackhawks winger Ryan Garbutt went 0 for 9 on shooting with no assists in his first three of the season.
Garbutt is off to a slow start for his first season on the Blackhawks after being traded from Dallas in the offseason. However, the forward could have many more opportunities in the long season ahead.
The Stars traded Garbutt and Trevor Daley to the Blackhawks in exchange for Patrick Sharp and Stephen Johns on Friday.Garbutt will likely slot into a bottom-six role with Chicago in 2015-16. He is more valuable to his NHL team than his fantasy owners, as he is a top-notch agitator when on the ice. He tallied eight goals and 17 assists for a total of 25 points in 67 games with Dallas in 2014-15.
Garbutt registered a goal and two PIM in Monday's 5-1 win over the Sharks.Garbutt is a valued cog on the third line for the Stars, but his skill set is mostly marginalized in the fantasy realm. With 24 points, 55 PIM, and 81 hits on the season, he's really only an asset in very deep leagues.
Garbutt tacked on a secondary assist in Tuesday's 2-1 win over the Flyers.Garbutt had 15 assists last season, and he's already matched that total with 15 more games on the schedule. His role as a bottom-six forward is not ideal for fantasy owners, but Garbutt can be a sneaky fantasy option skating for the Stars, a team that shares with the Blues the Western Conference lead in goals scored at 209.
Garbutt picked up an assist in Saturday's 3-2 loss to the Sabres.Despite occupying a bottom-six role most of the season for the Stars, Garbutt has provided a fair amount of offense, generating seven goals, 10 assists, and 104 shots on goal over 44 games. Even so, those numbers make him strictly a deep-league consideration.
Garbutt registered an assist, a plus-1 rating, and a pair of shots in Saturday's win over the Wild. That assist extends Garbutt's point streak to four games, a stretch over which he has two goals, two assists, a plus-5 rating, and an average of 2.75 shots per game. It seems unlikely that Garbutt can keep this pace up, but if you're playing him, you have to love this. It's as good as it's going to get for the 29-year-old winger.
