Islanders' Jordan Schmaltz: Traded in minor-league deal
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

The Islanders acquired Schmaltz from Toronto in exchange for Matt Lorito on Monday, Bob McKenzie of TSN reports.

Schmaltz recorded 13 points in 37 games with AHL Toronto this season. A first-round pick in 2012, the 6-foot-2 blueliner has just five assists in 42 career NHL games. He will report to AHL Bridgeport.

Maple Leafs' Jordan Schmaltz: Acquired via trade
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Schmaltz was brought in by Toronto from St. Louis in exchange for Andreas Borgman.

Schmaltz will likely be given the opportunity to show his new organization what he can bring to the table, but considering the team has already acquired Tyson Barrie, Cody Ceci and Ben Harpur, it seems unlikely he will make the Opening Night lineup versus Ottawa on Oct. 2.

Blues' Jordan Schmaltz: Heads to waivers
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

The Blues placed Schmaltz on waivers Sunday, Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet reports.

This move has been inevitable for some time. Schmaltz has been a healthy scratch for nine straight games and 19 of 39 games this season. The Blues likely didn't find any worthy offers on the trade market, so they'll risk the waiver wire with their 2012 first-round pick. He has two assists and a minus-7 rating in 20 games this season while logging just 11:29 per contest. Schmaltz isn't expected to clear waivers, but if he does, he'll be assigned to AHL San Antonio.

Blues' Jordan Schmaltz: Awfully accustomed to press box
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Schmaltz will be a healthy scratch for Monday's game against the Rangers, per Lou Korac of

Schmaltz will be a press-box spectator for the seventh consecutive game, and that's a discouraging sign when you consider Carl Gunnarsson (upper body) remains out of commission. There's nothing to see here from a fantasy perspective.

Blues' Jordan Schmaltz: Rarely finding scoresheet
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Schmaltz has two assists and a minus-3 rating in 16 games this season.

The 25-year-old defenseman is fighting for his roster spot, but he's averaging just 11:48 per game -- a low mark for the blue line. Schmaltz's jojb security will come into question more when Robert Bortuzzo (lower body) returns from injured reserve, which could be as early as Wednesday against the Red Wings.

Blues' Jordan Schmaltz: Judgement on horizon
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

The Blues will need to make a decision on Schmaltz once Robert Bortuzzo (lower body) returns from injured reserve.

Since Carl Gunnarsson (hip) just returned from non-roster, injured reserve, the Blues have seven healthy defensemen. When Bortuzzo returns, which could be as early as Saturday against the Wild, there will be eight. The Blues could keep just 13 forwards, but that would limit their flexibility when injuries arise. Therefore, the Blues will likely shed weight on the blue line, and Schmaltz, who was their 2012 first-round pick, is the only one that wasn't in the seven-man bunch last year. He has one assist and is averaging 12:47 through eight games, so he's not a lock to stay on the roster.

Blues' Jordan Schmaltz: Secures spot on roster for now
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Schmaltz made the Blues' 23-man roster.

Schmaltz was the Blues' 2012 first-round pick but has played just 22 games with the big club, notching three assists. He's being kept with the Blues right now since there's injury concerns on top of the depth chart on top of Robert Bortuzzo's one-game suspension, and it's unclear if he'll suit up Thursday against the Jets. Most importantly, Schmaltz is no longer waiver exempt. Therefore, the Blues would need to send him to waivers in order to assign him to AHL San Antonio, so they'll look to keep him with the big club for as long as possible.

Blues' Jordan Schmaltz: Pots shortie Sunday
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Schmaltz recorded a short-handed goal and a minus-2 rating in 21:45 of ice time during Sunday's 5-2 loss to the Capitals.

Schmaltz can only hope the marker is enough to get him off the roster bubble and into the Blues' opening night lineup. The 24-year-old blueliner has been knocking on the door of the NHL ranks for a couple of years now and he will know fairly soon if he has made the cut, but has little fantasy value until he can carve out a meaningful role with the big club.

Blues' Jordan Schmaltz: Re-ups with team
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Schmaltz agreed to terms on a two-year contract with St. Louis on Wednesday.

With the Blues just days away from the start of training camp, Schmaltz finally put pen to paper on a new contract. The deal is two-way for 2018-19 before converting to a one-way in the second year and comes in at just $700,000 annually. Whether the blueliner secures a spot on the Opening Night roster against Winnipeg on Oct. 4 likely won't be determined until closer to the end of camp.

Blues' Jordan Schmaltz: Resumes skating with contract on hold
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Schmaltz has been in St. Louis skating with the Blues, despite how he remains a restricted free agent this late in the offseason, Jeremy Rutherford of The Athletic reports.

Rutherford opines that this is a wise decision on Schmaltz's part, and we agree completely, as it shows that the defenseman's focus is on hockey first and foremost. The Wisconsin native has only produced three points over 22 games at the top level since making his NHL debut in March of 2017.

Blues' Jordan Schmaltz: Still without contract as camp approaches
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Schmaltz, who is a restricted free agent, remains unsigned with training camp three weeks away.

Schmaltz is likely seeking a one-way contract even though he'll spend most of 2018-19 with AHL San Antonio, barring a slew of injuries. The 2012 first-round pick could log NHL time to kick off the campaign, however, since Jay Bouwmeester (hip) and Carl Gunnarsson (knee) are both coming off season-ending surgeries. The Blues need to keep Schmaltz around, too, as four of their top seven defensemen will hit free agency next summer.

Blues' Jordan Schmaltz: Secures qualifying offer
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Schmaltz was extended a qualifying offer by the Blues on Sunday, Jim Thomas of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.

The 2012 first-round pick by the Blues has waited patiently for his chance to shine, and it has rarely surfaced. Schmaltz has suited up for just 22 NHL games in the last two seasons, and he's played the rest in the AHL. Time is running out too, as rookie Vince Dunn stole his roster spot last season, and the Blues' Colton Parayko and Joel Edmundson, who are both the same age as Schmaltz (25), have full-time positions locked up. However, Schmaltz will get a chance to prove himself early if he stays in St. Louis, since Jay Bouwmeester (hip) and Carl Gunnarsson (knee) are both recovering from surgery.

Blues' Jordan Schmaltz: Season-ending injury specified as concussion
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Schmaltz dealt with a concussion at the end of the 2017-18 campaign, Lou Korac of reports.

The Wisconsin native sustained his injury in a March 30 contest against the Golden Knights and would end up missing the last five games of the regular season. Schmaltz only managed one point (an assist) through 13 games, as his career is still in the infant stages.

Blues' Jordan Schmaltz: Remains day-to-day
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Schmaltz (upper body) is listed as day-to-day ahead of Saturday's match against the Avalanche, Blues beat writer Lou Korac reports.

Schmaltz looks as though he will miss five straight tilts to close out 2017-18 due to an upper-body issue after staying behind when the team began its road trip Friday. He could have a chance to return for the playoffs should the Blues win and make it in, but there's no guarantee he would draw in even if the team earns a bid. Chris Butler figures to hold down a spot on the third pair again in Saturday's season finale.

Blues' Jordan Schmaltz: Stays home for Friday's game
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Schmaltz (upper body) didn't travel with the team and won't play Friday against the Blackhawks, Jim Thomas of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.

This will be the fourth consecutive game Schmaltz sits out, and it was his last chance of the season to square off against his younger brother Nick. It's unclear if Schmaltz will make the trip to Colorado for Saturday's play-in game, but it appears Chris Butler will hold down the third pairing with Robert Bortuzzo for now.

Blues' Jordan Schmaltz: Unavailable Wednesday
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Schmaltz (upper body) will not be in action against the Blackhawks on Wednesday, Jim Thomas of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.

Schmaltz has yet to receive medical clearance to suit up, according to coach Mike Yeo. The defenseman will no doubt be eager to get back in action for Friday's matchup with Chicago in order to play against his brother Nick. In the Madison, Wisconsin native's absence, Chris Butler figures to continue filling in on the blue line.

Blues' Jordan Schmaltz: Still sidelined
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Schmaltz (upper body) won't play Monday against Washington, Lou Korac of reports.

The injury bug has now sidelined Schmaltz for two games, and Chris Butler and Mitch Reinke should continue to split playing time while he's out. The Wisconsin native has been steadily producing points in the minors, logging 48 points (eight goals, 40 assists) over 73 games in his last two seasons, but only has one assist in 13 games with St. Louis in 2017-18.

Blues' Jordan Schmaltz: Remains out
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Schmaltz (upper body) won't play against Arizona on Saturday, Jeremy Rutherford of The Athletic St. Louis reports.

Schmaltz has been used sparingly throughout 2017-18, only averaging 10:58 of ice time, though he had drawn into the lineup three times in a row before he suffered his injury Friday against Vegas. The 24-year-old is still being listed as day-to-day, and his next chance to return will be Monday against Washington.

Blues' Jordan Schmaltz: Leaves contest with upper-body injury
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Schmaltz sustained an upper-body injury in Friday night's road game against the Golden Knights. He will not return.

The rookie defenseman was limited to 2:42 of ice time in this one. Expect a quick turnaround in terms of an evaluation for Schmaltz, as the Blues go right back to work in Arizona on Saturday.

Blues' Jordan Schmaltz: Eager for chance to prove himself
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Schmaltz is expected to see an uptick in usage after Jay Bouwmeester (hip) has been ruled out for the season.

Schmaltz, a 2012 first-round pick, is a talented blueliner that simply hasn't been able to crack the lineup in St. Louis due to a numbers game. Now is the perfect storm for Schmaltz, though. The Blues are slowly drifting from playoff contention, Bouwmeester is going under the knife and Schmaltz will become a restricted free agent after this season. Per Lou Korac of, Schmaltz said, "I think for me, the time is now. I've got to assert myself and prove that I can play in this league." The remaining 16 games on the NHL schedule should provide exactly that, but even a quality end to the season won't guarantee a roster spot next year. Unless the Blues buy out a player like Bouwmeester ($5.4 million cap hit) after this season, the Blues will have seven defensemen on payroll to begin the 2018-19 campaign -- assuming they re-sign lineup-fixture Joel Edmundson (wrist), who will be a restricted free agent this summer.
