Scott Hartnell: Retiring from NHL
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Hartnell announced his retirement via social media Monday.

Hartnell played 17 years in the NHL for Nashville, Philadelphia and Columbus, logging 1,249 games in which he tallied 327 goals, 380 assists and perhaps most notably 1,809 PIM. The winger played with a physicality that endeared him to home-team crowds and vilified him among the opposition. Selected sixth overall in the 2000 NHL Draft, the Saskatchewan native certainly lived up to expectations, including being named an All-Star in the 2011-12 season.

Scott Hartnell: Open to ideas in free agency
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Hartnell, a pending unrestricted free agent, is keeping an open mind about the possibility of playing again in 2018-19, Sportsnet reports.

Hartnell won't be retained by the Predators and retirement could be on the horizon unless another team scoops him up in free agency. "Me and my wife have talked about it," said Hartnell. "Our son isn't in school. If there's a team that's the right fit for all of us, we are 100 percent going." A gritty veteran with a scorer's touch, Hartnell has amassed 327 goals and 380 assists over 1,249 career regular-season contests between the Predators, Flyers and Blue Jackets. If he does latch on with another club, it would presumably be a one- or two-year deal.

Scott Hartnell: Jettisoned by Preds, considering retirement
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Hartnell will not be back with the Predators next season and may retire, The Tennessean reports.

This doesn't come as a big surprise, as Hartnell routinely saw fewer than 10 minutes of ice time per game down the stretch in the regular season and was a healthy scratch for nine of the Preds' 14 playoff games. Now a pending unrestricted free agent, the 36-year-old Hartnell said he will contemplate retirement over the summer. "I'll take some time away to think about it," Hartnell said. "These last couple months, just wondering if I still have it, if I could still skate. I thought I played pretty solid [last season], but your heart's got to be there too with it, and that passion. I feel like it's there."

Predators' Scott Hartnell: Hopes to stick around Nashville
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Hartnell would welcome a return to Nashville next season, though he's still contemplating what his future holds, Brooks Bratten of the Predators' official site reports.

The Predators selected the hard-nosed winger sixth overall in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft and he returned to Nashville this season after spending his prime years with the Flyers and Blue Jackets -- he'd end up with 13 goals and 11 assists over 62 regular-season contests. However, he was a spare part through the first two rounds of the playoffs having only appeared in four games and missing nine. Given that he's a pending unrestricted free agent, Hartnell very well could end up with a different club despite how he'd "love to come back" to the Preds.

Predators' Scott Hartnell: Plays as injury fill-in Saturday against Jackets
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Hartnell returned from a three-game absence as a healthy scratch for Saturday's regular-season finale against Columbus. He subbed in for the Viktor Arvidsson (rest) on the top line, and recorded a power-play assist in 14:33 of ice time.

With the Preds set to begin their first-round playoff series against the Avalanche in the coming week, it's unclear what Hartnell's role will be. The 35-year-old averaged less than 10 minutes per game down the stretch and was a healthy scratch six times over the last 20 games of the regular season. He could either prove to be a late-round steal in your playoff pool, or a complete bust. Further, his one-year contract with the Preds is set to expire after this season, so Hartnell will likely be looking to ply his trade with a new team come October.

Predators' Scott Hartnell: Watches from press box Friday
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Hartnell served as a healthy scratch for the second time in three games Friday against the Avalanche.

The writing was on the wall for Hartnell, whose ice time had dipped to below the 10-minute mark for three consecutive games earlier in March. The 35-year-old veteran was brought in during the offseason in an attempt to provide some scoring depth for the Preds, but with the emergence of younger players like Kevin Fiala and Colton Sissons this season, along with the recent acquisition of Ryan Hartman, Hartnell now looks to be the odd man out in Nashville. Bench him immediately.

Predators' Scott Hartnell: Extends goal-scoring streak Sunday
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Hartnell extended his goal-scoring streak to three games Sunday against the Blues.

At 35 years old, the veteran winger is no longer the offensive force he once was, but he's been showing flashes of his old form lately. He currently has eight points in his last 11 games, bringing his season total to 19 points in 47 games. He continues to skate in a third-line capacity for the Preds with an average ice time of just 12:31, but that includes 1:29 worth of power-play time. This makes Hartnell a decent option in deeper fantasy formats.

Predators' Scott Hartnell: Makes impact against Sens
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Hartnell recorded two assists and a major penalty for fighting during Thursday's 4-3 overtime loss to Ottawa.

The veteran is beginning to find an offensive groove with three goals and five assists through his past 16 contests. Obviously, those aren't go-to numbers, but Hartnell has slotted into more of a supporting role with an average of just 12:34 of ice time per game this season. He's still on the fantasy radar in deep settings (especially formats including PIM), but his upside is significantly capped considering his age and limited minutes.

Predators' Scott Hartnell: Ice time on decline
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Hartnell has just four points in his last 17 games, and has averaged just 10:26 in ice time over that span.

Despite occasionally filling in on the second line for the injured Filip Forsberg (hand), Hartnell still regularly sees ice time in the single digits, and no longer sees any meaningful time on the power play. As a result, his overall fantasy value has declined significantly, and you should no longer be relying on him in the majority of standard formats.

Predators' Scott Hartnell: Scores fifth goal in victory
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Hartnell scored his fifth goal of the season in Saturday's win over the Wild.

Hartnell hadn't scored since Nov.3 against Anaheim and is stuck on just eight points through 24 contests. He saw just 10:26 of ice time Saturday and is currently skating in a bottom-six role. Hartnell can be of value in some very deep leagues due to his 47 PIM or the occasional power-play marker, but at this stage in his career, it's best to avoid him in most formats.

Predators' Scott Hartnell: Gearing up to play Wednesday
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Hartnell (lower body) has been activated from injured reserve and took part in line rushes during morning skate, indicating he'll return to the lineup for Wednesday's matchup versus the Canucks.

While technically a game-time decision, look for Hartnell to return and assume a spot on the fourth line. He missed a month's worth of games with his injury, so it's no surprise to see the gritty Canadian being eased back into the fold. The veteran winger has posted four goals and three assists against a poor minus-8 rating through 16 games this season.

Predators' Scott Hartnell: Could return Wednesday
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Hartnell (lower body) will be a game-time decision versus Vancouver on Wednesday, Brooks Bratten of the Predators' official site reports.

Hartnell took part in line rushes at the game-day skate, slotting into the fourth line, which seems a decent indication he will be ready to go against the Canucks. If the winger is indeed given the all-clear, it will make the end of a 13-game stint on the sideline. When he is in the lineup, the veteran has notched seven points, 20 PIM and a minus-8 rating. If he returns to action, Hartnell will need to be activated off injured reserve prior to puck drop.

Predators' Scott Hartnell: Spotted on ice with teammates
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Hartnell (lower body) skated with his teammates Tuesday, Adam Vingan of The Tennessean reports.

One of the league's grittier offensive producers, Hartnell remains on injured reserve, and there's little doubt that he'll miss his eighth straight game Tuesday. He's added four goals, three helpers and four power-play points through 16 contests this season.

Predators' Scott Hartnell: Out 3-5 weeks
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Hartnell will be sidelined 3-to-5 weeks due to a lower-body injury.

The veteran forward has been solid as a power-play specialist for Nashville this season, notching two goals and two assists on the man advantage in 16 games, so the Predators will need to find a suitable replacement for the duration of his absence. Hartnell, who has totaled four goals and three assists this campaign, could be on the shelf until mid-December, making him a lock to be placed on injured reserve.

Predators' Scott Hartnell: Out with lower-body injury
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Hartnell is "out right now" with a lower-body injury according to head coach Peter Laviolette.

Hartnell left Saturday's game with what was then an undisclosed injury. Now we know a little more about what's bothering him, and being declared "out right now" also makes it sound likely that Hartnell will miss Tuesday's game against the Capitals.

Predators' Scott Hartnell: Exits game Saturday
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Hartnell left Saturday's shootout win over the Penguins in the first period due to an undisclosed injury and did not return, Brooks Bratten of the Predators' official site reports.

When questioned about Hartnell after the game, coach Peter Laviolette was unable to provide any sort of update on the veteran forward's status. The 35-year-old has been seeing looks on Nashville's power-play unit throughout the season and had posted two points in the three games prior to Saturday's contest, so the Predators and some fantasy owners will be hoping that this mystery injury isn't a serious one.

Predators' Scott Hartnell: Promoted to top line Saturday
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Hartnell recorded an assist in Saturday's 4-3 overtime win over the Kings. He saw ice time of 17:22 skating on the first line with Ryan Johansen and Viktor Arvidsson.

Hartnell now has seven points in 14 games, putting him on pace to eclipse the 37 points he scored last season with the Blue Jackets. He continues to boast significant fantasy upside, especially now that he's worked himself into a top-six role. Feel free to pluck him from your league's waiver wire if he's still available.

Predators' Scott Hartnell: Back on ice
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Hartnell (undisclosed) took part in Tuesday's optional skate after sitting out for a maintenance day Monday, Brooks Bratten of the Predators' official site reports.

Hartnell appears to be ready to go against the Flames on Tuesday following a rest day. The winger has been held off the scoresheet in three straight outings in which he has fired a mere five shots on goal. For now, the veteran will likely remain on the power play, but if he doesn't start letting the puck fly with more frequency, he could get bounced by coach Peter Laviolette.

Predators' Scott Hartnell: Absent from practice
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Hartnell was not in attendance at practice Monday, Thomas Willis of the Predators' official site reports.

The team did not provide any specifics on why Hartnell was not at practice, which puts his status against Calgary on Tuesday up in the air. The winger has notched three goals and one assist in eight games this season, but has been held off the scoresheet in three straight contests. Pontus Aberg filled in for the veteran at practice and would likely slot into the lineup if Hartnell is unable to go.

Predators' Scott Hartnell: Nets pair of goals
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Hartnell potted two goals -- including a power-play tally -- in Tuesday's 6-5 home win over the Flyers.

The Predators are giving the physical winger plenty of man-advantage ice time, as he's averaged 3:58 in that spot through the first three games. His shooting percentage of 33.3 percent is obviously unsustainable, but Hartnell's a tough one to sit while he's clicking offensively on the Preds' third line with Nick Bonino and Pontus Aberg.
