  • Predators' Scott Hartnell: Could be primed for scoring-line role with Preds

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(6:48 pm ET) Hartnell could be looking at a top-six role with the Predators this season, the Tennessean reports.

Preds coach Peter Laviolette is very familiar with the 35-year-old Hartnell, as the winger scored a career-high 67 points under Laviolette as a Flyer back in 2011-12. With only 21-year-old Kevin Fiala ahead of him on the Preds' left wing depth chart, Hartnell has an excellent chance at landing a scoring line role this season -- especially given his experience on the power play, as 183 of Hartnell's 683 career points have come with the man advantage. Don't be afraid to take a flyer on Hartnell in the later rounds of your fantasy drafts this year.

Predators' Scott Hartnell: Joins forward ranks in Nashville

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(7/1/17) Hartnell signed a one-year, $1 million contract with the Predators on Saturday, Pierre LeBrun of TSN reports.

The Blue Jackets bought out the remainder of Hartnell's contract following an underwhelming 2016-17 campaign that resulted in just 37 points (13 goals, 24 assists) over 78 games and failed to add any additional tallies over four playoff contests. Despite the down year, the Predators were willing to ink the veteran winger -- who has a history of productive seasons -- to a one-year deal to rejoin the organization he began his professional career with back in 2000-01.

Scott Hartnell: Bought out by Blue Jackets

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(6/29/17) The Blue Jackets bought out the final two years of Hartnell's six-year, $28.5 million contract Thursday.

This move doesn't come as much of a surprise, as Hartnell was told at his end-of-season meeting with management that he likely wouldn't be returning to the Blue Jackets next season, Aaron Portzline of The Columbus Dispatch reports. The veteran winger's first two seasons in Columbus (2014-15 and 2016-17) were quite productive, as he was able to amass 109 points (51 goals, 58 assists) in 156 games. However, his offense declined noticeably last season, as he was only able to notch 37 points (13 goals, 24 assists) in 78 games. Buying the 35-year-old forward's contract out frees up $3.25 million in cap space for the Blue Jackets in each of the next two seasons, so this move makes sense for a team that's primed to contend in 2017-18. Hartnell is now an unrestricted free agent, so he's free to sign with a new club immediately.

Blue Jackets' Scott Hartnell: Could be bought out

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(6/13/17) Hartnell was told at his end-of-season meeting with management that he isn't likely to return to the Blue Jackets next season, Aaron Portzline of The Columbus Dispatch reports.

The team didn't ask the veteran winger to waive his no-movement clause ahead of Monday's deadline, so the only way the Jackets can avoid having Hartnell tie up a spot on their protected list for the expansion draft is by buying out the final two seasons of his contract. The 35-year-old scored 13 goals and 37 points with a plus-14 rating in 78 games last season, but he averaged just 12:04 of ice time -- his lowest mark since his rookie campaign back in 2000-01. That's a strong sign that he's not in the Jackets' plans moving forward.

Blue Jackets' Scott Hartnell: Won't waive no-move clause

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(6/12/17) Hartnell wasn't asked to waive his no-move clause by the Blue Jackets ahead of Monday's deadline, Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch reports.

This should mean that Hartnell won't be exposed as an option to be picked up in the expansion draft in late June, which appears to suggest the Blue Jackets are planning on having the 34-year-old veteran back for the 2017-18 campaign. That said, Hartnell tallied just 13 goals and 24 assists across 78 games last year, which were both his lowest totals since 2012-13.
