  • Red Wings' Jared Coreau: Lobbying for role as primary NHL backup

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(7/25/17) The Red Wings are content using Coreau as the third option on the depth chart, but goalie coach Jeff Salajko told the Detroit Free Press earlier this month, "I have no problem with him being the backup goalie, either," TSN reports.

Veteran backstop Jimmy Howard is expected to reprise his role as the starter for the upcoming season, while Petr Mrazek -- who struggled to the tune of a 3.04 GAA and .901 save percentage last season -- tentatively steps in as the No. 2 option. Still, Coreau made 14 NHL appearances last season, and he's fresh off a Calder Cup win with AHL Grand Rapids -- this should be enough to give Mrazek a run for his money in training camp; it's a developing situation that's certainly worth monitoring with another fantasy season looming.

Red Wings' Jared Coreau: Backstops Griffins to Calder Cup victory

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(6/14/17) Coreau picked up 29 of a possible 32 saves at home against AHL Syracuse on Tuesday, helping the Griffins to the franchise's second Calder Cup championship.

The Griffins settled down after drawing two early penalties and ended up rallying from a 3-2 deficit in the contest. Coreau went 15-4 and never lost at home during these playoffs, though his peripherals (2.89 GAA, .909 save percentage) weren't at all strong. However, the hulking backstop listed at 6-foot-6 and 220 pounds may claim the No. 2 spot with the Red Wings next season, as Petr Mrazek or Jimmy Howard could be dealt this offseason to clear precious cap space. Coreau did pick up 14 games at hockey's highest level this season -- he filled in for Howard when he sustained a significant knee injury -- and while the Ontario native's numbers (3.46 GAA, .887 save mark) left a lot to be desired, he did manage two shutouts and almost assuredly will be more comfortable the next time he's in the crease for the big club. He has sleeper appeal in deeper leagues due to the chance that he could make the leap to the NHL.

Red Wings' Jared Coreau: Piling up wins in Calder Cup race

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(5/23/17) Coreau is currently 8-2 for AHL Grand Rapids in the 2017 Calder Cup playoffs. He could start next season as a backup goalie for the Red Wings in the likely event that the team moves on from Jimmy Howard or Petr Mrazek, the Detroit Free Press reports.

While the Northern Michigan University product has been associated with the AHL's Griffins since 2013-14, this marks his first year as a starter for the minor-league club. Coreau's peripherals (2.53 GAA, .915 save percentage) aren't the strongest this time around, but they at least represent a return to near normalcy. The 25-year-old experienced a rude awakening at the NHL level to the tune of a 3.46 GAA and .887 save mark through 14 games as a substitute for Howard, who missed 32 contests with a knee injury. It might take a few seasons for Coreau to fully adjust to the fast-paced nature of the NHL game, but he's said to have a sound working relationship with Wings goalie coach Jeff Salajko; that bodes well for his fantasy prospects.

Red Wings' Jared Coreau: Returns to minors

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(3/9/17) Coreau was reassigned to AHL Grand Rapids on Thursday, MLive.com reports.

The rookie was chased from the net early in Wednesday's loss to the Bruins, yielding three goals on eight shots before getting replaced by Petr Mrazek. That was Coreau's only appearance in nine games, but he's bound to see more consistent playing time in the minors now that Jimmy Howard (knee) has been activated from long-term injured reserve to the benefit of the parent club.

Red Wings' Jared Coreau: Makes just five saves in loss to Bruins

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(3/9/17) Coreau saved only five of eight shots before being pulled in the first period of Wednesday's loss to Boston.

With an .887 save percentage and 3.46 GAA through 14 outings, the 25-year-old netminder is a low-end fantasy asset. Additionally, Coreau hasn't won any of his past five starts and has a .848 save percentage during that stretch. At best, he could be utilized as a potential streaming option in seasonal leagues or as a low-priced flier in daily contests, but it would have to be an extremely friendly matchup.
