|(6/14/17) Coreau picked up 29 of a possible 32 saves at home against AHL Syracuse on Tuesday, helping the Griffins to the franchise's second Calder Cup championship.|
The Griffins settled down after drawing two early penalties and ended up rallying from a 3-2 deficit in the contest. Coreau went 15-4 and never lost at home during these playoffs, though his peripherals (2.89 GAA, .909 save percentage) weren't at all strong. However, the hulking backstop listed at 6-foot-6 and 220 pounds may claim the No. 2 spot with the Red Wings next season, as Petr Mrazek or Jimmy Howard could be dealt this offseason to clear precious cap space. Coreau did pick up 14 games at hockey's highest level this season -- he filled in for Howard when he sustained a significant knee injury -- and while the Ontario native's numbers (3.46 GAA, .887 save mark) left a lot to be desired, he did manage two shutouts and almost assuredly will be more comfortable the next time he's in the crease for the big club. He has sleeper appeal in deeper leagues due to the chance that he could make the leap to the NHL.
