  • Flames' Mike Smith: Preparing for Thursday's start

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(10/18/17) Smith will assume the home net versus the Hurricanes on Thursday, Roger Millions of Sportsnet reports.

This will be Smith's second start against an Eastern Conference foe since joining the Flames through a trade with the Coyotes in June. He's fared much worse in clashes with opponents not aligned within his own conference -- he's gone 121-106-33 with a 2.54 GAA and .918 save percentage in 272 games against the West, compared to a 2.91 GAA and .906 save percentage over 208 career matches against teams in the opposite half of the league.

Flames' Mike Smith: Rebounds with great effort against Canucks

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(10/15/17) Smith stopped 27 of 29 shots in Saturday's win over the Canucks.

It's clear Smith is the man in Calgary this season, with the team turning right back to the veteran after he was burned for five goals against Ottawa the previous night. The workhorse is faring well with his new team, sporting a 4-2-0 record with a .929 save percentage. The 35-year-old makes for a reliable fantasy play on a talented Flames squad that should contend for a playoff position.

Flames' Mike Smith: Looking to rebound Saturday

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(10/14/17) Smith will get right back to work Saturday night, drawing a road start versus the Canucks, Kristen Odland of the Calgary Sun reports.

Calgary's No. 1 netminder was shelled by the Senators on Friday night, yielding five goals on 22 shots before getting replaced by Eddie Lack in the third period. Smith has started all five games so far, and his latest performance marked the first time the former Coyote allowed more than three goals in a given contest with his new club. The Canucks have scored just seven times through their first three matches, making this an ideal opportunity for Smith to turn things around.

Flames' Mike Smith: Departs after allowing five goals in loss

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(10/14/17) Smith yielded five goals on 22 shots over 47:58 in a 6-0 loss against the Senators on Friday. The Flames yanked Smith shortly after he allowed his fifth goal at the 7:29 mark of the third period.

Similar to his 2016-17 campaign in Arizona, Smith has been peppered early this season and leads the league in saves. Ironically enough, though, in a much stronger defensive outing that saw Calgary give up just 28 shots against Ottawa, Smith yielded five goals. This stinker will drop the 35-year-old's season save percentage from .950 to .922 and raise his GAA from 2.00 to 2.71. Smith should be a more reliable fantasy goaltender this season if only because he'll be in line to win more games, but the veteran will be prone to poor nights like this from time to time.

Flames' Mike Smith: In goal Friday

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(10/13/17) Smith will be between the pipes against the Senators on Friday, Pat Steinberg of Sportsnet 960 The Fan reports.

Smith will be making his fifth consecutive start to open the season, having posted a 3-1-0 record in his previous appearances. The Ontario native has faced more rubber than any other netminder in the league (160 shots) and could be in line for another heavy workload considering the Senators are averaging 37.3 shots per game.
