Joel Ward: Officially announces retirement
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Ward will officially hang up his skates, he announced Monday.

Ward hasn't played professionally since 2017-18 when he was with the Sharks, so Monday's announcement is merely a formality. Over the course of his 11-year NHL career, the gritty winger racked up 133 goals, 171 assists and 557 hits in 726 games for Minnesota, Nashville, Washington and San Jose. Undrafted out of college, Ward also appeared in 83 playoffs games but was never able to lift Lord Stanley's cup, including losing in the Stanley Cup Finals in 2015-16 to the Penguins.

Joel Ward: Retires from pro hockey
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Ward has officially retired from professional hockey, Shane Ross of CBC reports.

Ward played 11 NHL seasons and a total of 726 games, finishing with 133 goals and 304 points. He added 52 points in 83 playoff games.

Joel Ward: Dropped from PTO with Habs
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Ward was released from his professional tryout agreement with the Canadiens on Tuesday.

Ward was hoping to extend his NHL career with the Habs, but evidently he didn't impress in training camp. The veteran winger is 37 years old, accumulating 133 goals and 171 assists through 726 career games between the Wild, Predators, Capitals and Sharks.

Canadiens' Joel Ward: Lands PTO with Canadiens
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Ward will participate in Canadiens training camp.

Coming off a 12-point campaign in 2017-18, the 37-year-old Ward will look to impress Canadiens management in camp after being invited on a PTO. Montreal general manager Marc Bergevin remains "shy" to commit to a rebuild but that is precisely the path his team is headed down. A youth movement is underway in La Belle Province and even if he were to crack the Opening Night roster, Ward is not fantasy relevant at this point in his career.

Sharks' Joel Ward: Benched for postseason
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Ward was absent from the lineup for the entire 2018 Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Ward -- who returned from a shoulder injury for the last six regular-season games -- couldn't crack the lineup for any of the Sharks' 10 postseason outings. As a result of logging just 52 contests this year, the winger failed to reach the 20-point mark for only the second time in his 10-year NHL career. The veteran will be an unrestricted free agent this offseason and could decide to retire if San Jose opts not to re-sign him.

Sharks' Joel Ward: Returns to action
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Ward returned to the lineup following a 22-game absence Tuesday, registering one hit while logging 11:05 of ice time in a 3-2 overtime loss to the Blues.

Ward isn't much of an offensive contributor at this stage in his career, having totaled just five goals and 11 points in 47 contests this season, but it was nonetheless great to see him back in action Tuesday ahead of the Sharks' upcoming playoff run. The veteran winger will likely skate in a bottom six-role whenever coach Peter DeBoer opts to slot him into the lineup down the stretch.

Sharks' Joel Ward: Looks ready to play
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Sharks coach Peter DeBoer said Ward (shoulder) has progressed to the point that he could be ready now, Curtis Pashelka of The San Jose Mercury News reports.

The Sharks next face the Golden Knights in San Jose on Thursday. It appears that Ward will be healthy enough to play in that contest, but then again, he's missed the last 19 games and fantasy owners could be reluctant to pick him up for the nine games that remain in the regular season. With five goals and six assists on the year, Ward simply hasn't produced enough offense to warrant much attention outside the deepest of leagues.

Sharks' Joel Ward: Not ready to return
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Ward (shoulder) won't play against the Devils on Tuesday.

Despite being lifted from injured reserve Sunday, Ward needs to continue practicing with contact before he can play in a game. Ward has been logging just 11:57 of ice time through 46 games, notching 11 points along the way.

Sharks' Joel Ward: Hops off IR
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Ward (shoulder) was activated from injured reserve Sunday, per the NHL's official media site.

The veteran forward has compiled five goals and 11 points while averaging a career-low 11:57 of ice time through 46 games this season. Ward has sat out 18 games with this shoulder issue, but he's expected to return to the lineup Tuesday against the Devils. Still, fantasy owners vying for his services should check back before Tuesday's game to ensure he hasn't suffered a setback.

Sharks' Joel Ward: Will sit out another week
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Ward (shoulder) won't play on the Sharks' road trip, keeping him out until at least Feb. 27, Paul Gackle of The Mercury News reports.

This is consistent with Ward's week-to-week status, but it shouldn't affect fantasy owners much as the 37-year-old winger has averaged 11:57 of ice time through 46 games with just 11 points to show for it. Veteran forward Jannik Hansen will continue to man the third line until Ward can return.

Sharks' Joel Ward: Lands on IR
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Ward (shoulder) was placed on injured reserve Monday.

Despite the move to IR, Ward's status should still be considered as week-to-week, which is what bench boss Peter DeBoer called him Thursday. Ward has yet to return to the ice since being injured Feb. 8, but he's able to be activated from the injured list as soon as he's deemed healthy. Keep an eye out for updates from the Sharks, which will likely come when Ward hits certain milestones -- like returning to practice -- on his road back to full health.

Sharks' Joel Ward: Considered week-to-week
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Coach Peter DeBoer labeled Ward (shoulder) week-to-week Thursday, suggesting he's facing an extended absence.

Ward last took the ice Feb. 8 against the Golden Knights, exiting after just 5:19 of ice time. The veteran winger has really fallen off the table in terms of production this season, notching just 11 points (five goals, six assists) through 46 contests. As a result, Ward has also seen a massive drop in ice time (11:57 per game) and has been removed from the man advantage, plummeting his fantasy value to its lowest point in years. More information on Ward should surface as he draws closer to a return, but his status likely impacts far fewer fantasy rosters than it did at this time a year ago.

Sharks' Joel Ward: Won't crack lineup Tuesday
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Ward (shoulder) is not projected to be in the lineup for Tuesday evening's showdown with the Coyotes.

Assuming a last-minute clearance of his health, Ward will miss a third consecutive game as a result of this shoulder issue. The veteran winger is nothing more than a depth player at this point anyway. Jannik Hansen will likely continue to fill in with Ward on the shelf.

Sharks' Joel Ward: Out again Sunday
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Ward (shoulder) will miss Sunday's contest in Anaheim.

Ward also sat out for Saturday's victory against the Oilers. With just five goals and 11 points on the season, this shouldn't have much fantasy impact, but it hurts San Jose's depth as the team tries to hang on to a playoff spot. His next chance to suit up will be Tuesday against the Coyotes.

Sharks' Joel Ward: Day-to-day with injured shoulder
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Ward has been upgraded to "day-to-day" with his shoulder ailment, Kevin Kurz of The Athletic Bay Area reports.

It was only a day ago that Ward was considered out indefinitely with his shoulder malady, but the outlook has evidently changed for the better since the shoulder wasn't separated. Fantasy owners shouldn't expect the winger to play Saturday, but perhaps he'll get cleared to suit up Sunday in Anaheim. Of course, we recommend that you check back on this developing situation as more details become available.

Sharks' Joel Ward: Faces significant shoulder injury
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Ward is out indefinitely after suffering a shoulder injury in Thursday's game against Vegas, Curtis Pashelka of The San Jose Mercury News reports.

Ward has averaged just 11:57 of ice time through 46 games, accruing five goals and 11 points in that span. The 37-year-old dealt with a shoulder injury last season but was able to play through it, including the playoffs. It's unclear if this is related, but the Sharks will likely have to dip into their minor-league program to provide offensive depth.

Sharks' Joel Ward: Departs due to injury
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Ward suffered an apparent upper-body during Thursday's game against the Golden Knights, Curtis Pashelka of The San Jose Mercury News reports.

The seriousness of Ward's ailment has yet to be determined, but he can be considered day-to-day ahead of Saturday's matchup with Edmonton until the Sharks release another update clarifying his status.

Sharks' Joel Ward: Healthy scratch Thursday
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Ward (coach's decision) will not play Thursday night against the Canucks, Joey Kenward of Sportsnet 650 reports.

Sharks bench boss Peter DeBoer will sit Ward in favor of Jannik Hansen, who gets to play against his old team. The former has been averaging a career low in minutes (12:21) this season, but Ward's been efficient with a gaudy 21.1 shooting percentage (four goals on 19 shots) including two game-winning tallies.

Sharks' Joel Ward: Notches assist
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Ward recorded an assist in a 4-3 overtime defeat to Vancouver on Friday.

Ward was able to win a faceoff back to Brent Burns, who launched a snapshot into the back of the net, ending a nine-game pointless streak for Ward. The 37-year-old has seen his point production drop a bit after recording 29 points last season, as he's only logged eight points (four goals, four assists) in 26 games thus far. Since Ward isn't on the power play and only averages 12:25 of ice time, we wouldn't expect an uptick in production anytime soon.

Sharks' Joel Ward: Posts game-winner versus Kings
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Ward score the game-winning goal during a 2-1 victory against the Kings on Sunday.

The fourth-liner barely played, amassing just over 10 minutes of ice time versus the Kings, but he tallied the most important goal of the night. Ward already has three goals this season, but there's no way he will be able to continue his current pace. The 36-year-old is barely averaging 12 minutes of ice time and only has eight shots on goal the entire season. That gives him a 37.5 shooting percentage, which would be nearly three times higher than his career norm in the category. While it's nice to see Ward off to a strong start, it's not likely to continue.
