  • Bruins' Urho Vaakanainen: Back with Providence

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(1/9/19) Vaakanainen was present for AHL Providence's Wednesday practice session, Mark Divver of The Providence Journal reports.

Vaakanainen is back with Providence after being a member of Finland's gold-medal winning team at the recent 2019 World Junior Championships. The 2017 first-rounder logged heavy minutes during that tournament, en route to logging four helpers in seven games. Now well past a concussion that previously limited him to six games with Providence and two with Boston, the 20-year-old will look to get back into the swing of things at the AHL level. The smooth-skating 6-foot-1, 187-pounder is a candidate for an NHL recall down the road, but the big club's blue-line corps is in good health at this time, with Charlie McAvoy (foot) nearing a return to action.

Bruins' Urho Vaakanainen: Will join Finland at World Juniors

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(12/21/18) Vaakanainen (concussion) will suit up for Finland at the 2019 World Junior Championships. Additionally, the defenseman has been removed from injured reserve, per the NHL media site.

By loaning Vaakanainen to Team Finland, the Bruins avoid having to make a decision on whether to keep him on the 23-man roster or send him back to AHL Providence now that he is healthy. At the latest, the 19-year-old will rejoin Boston in early January as he represents his country. What should happen when he returns will no doubt be a point of contention among the Bruins faithful.

Bruins' Urho Vaakanainen: Returns to practice

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(12/20/18) Vaakanainen (concussion) participated in practice Wednesday, Eric Russo of the Bruins' official site reports.

Vaakanainen was wearing a non-contact jersey Wednesday and isn't ready to return to the lineup yet. Once he's cleared to play, it's possible that the Bruins could allow the young blueliner to play for Team Finland at the upcoming World Junior Championships. Prior to suffering his concussion, the 2018 first-rounder did not record a point in two games with Boston.

    Bruins' Urho Vaakanainen: Nearing return

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(12/18/18) The Bruins are hoping Vaakanainen (concussion) will be able to practice Wednesday, Matt Porter of The Boston Globe reports.

Vaakanainen was dealing with the flu a week ago, but the main reason for his extended absence has been because of lingering concussion symptoms. If Wednesday's practice goes well for him, there's an outside chance he could play Thursday against the Canadiens, although the Bruins likely want to see a handful of practices out of him before taking the next step.

Bruins' Urho Vaakanainen: Hit with flu bug

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(12/11/18) Vaakanainen -- who is on injured reserve due to a concussion -- is dealing with the flu as well, Matt Porter of The Boston Globe reports.

Vaakanainen could be nearing a return from his 21-game absence, but falling ill won't help his chances of playing soon. Even once given the green light to play, the defenseman could struggle to pry a spot in the lineup away from Steve Kampfer or John Moore.
