  • Rangers' Sean Day: Finally on board in AHL

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(1/24/19) Day picked up his first point of the season, an assist, in AHL Hartford's 7-4 loss to Springfield on Wednesday.

Through 15 games with the Wolf Pack, Day now has one assist, zero penalty minutes and a minus-10 rating. He has spent a good portion of the season with ECHL Maine, where he has been far more productive (15 points in 19 games). Day turned just 21 years old in early January, but his status as a legitimate prospect is quickly fading. He simply doesn't have the hockey IQ to match his physical gifts. They would never admit it, but the Rangers would be thrilled if Day managed to carve out a career at the NHL level as a depth defender. The odds are against him.

Rangers' Sean Day: Playing well in OHL playoffs

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(4/1/18) Day scored twice and added two assists in OHL Kingston's 6-5 Game 5 triple overtime win over North Bay on Saturday.

Day tied the game with 20 seconds left in regulation before assisting on Kings prospect Gabe Vilardi's winner at 14:05 of the third extra session. He finished the series with eight points in the five contests. Day is an elite skater and he has a boatload of offensive ability, but he still makes plenty of mistakes with the puck and his reads need a ton of work. Day will play next season in the AHL, at which point we should get a better read on if his physical gifts are enough to compensate for his mental lapses.

Rangers' Sean Day: Producing for new OHL club

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(1/8/18) Day tallied a goal and added three assists in OHL Kingston's 8-3 win over Niagara on Sunday.

It was Day's third game with Kingston since his trade from Windsor last week. Although eligible to play in the AHL this year, the Rangers decided to have Day play one final season of junior hockey in hopes of working on his defensive positioning and cleaning up his mental lapses with the puck. He has made just modest strides in those two areas but he is having by far the best offensive season (26 points in 30 games) of his OHL career and he is now running the number one power play unit for one of the most talented teams in the league. His numbers should only increase in the second half of the year.
