by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Villalta was assigned to AHL Ontario on Saturday, Jack Harris of the Los Angeles Times reports.

Villalta will begin preparing for the AHL season. The 21-year-old is expected to take on a larger role now that Cal Petersen is a full-time NHLer and Jack Campbell is in Toronto. Last year, Villalta recorded an .899 save percentage over 22 AHL games.

Kings' Matt Villalta: On taxi squad
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Villalta (undisclosed) has been placed on the taxi squad by the Kings.

Villalta was selected by Los Angeles in the third round of the 2017 NHL Draft and split time between the AHL and ECHL last year. In 22 games with the Reing, the 21-year-old goalie went 10-6-2 with a .899 save percentage. Once Cal Petersen (COVID-19 protocols) is cleared to return, Villalta figures to be demoted to the minors.

by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Villalta (undisclosed) was deemed unable to participate in Saturday's practice, John Hoven of SiriusXM NHL Network Radio reports.

The team didn't reveal what Villalta is dealing with. The 21-year-old is a long shot to make the NHL roster out of training camp with Jonathan Quick, Cal Petersen (undisclosed) and Troy Grosenick in the fold. Villalta likely will wind up with AHL Ontario to start the year.

Kings' Matt Villalta: Shutout extends OHL career
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Villalta stopped all 25 shots in Sault Ste. Marie's 3-0 Game 4 win over Saginaw in OHL playoff action Thursday.

Down 3-0 in the series and on the verge of being swept, Villalta's strong effort allows the Greyhounds to see a Game 5. Although he was great Thursday, the 2017 third-round selection (72nd overall) is in the midst of his second straight poor (3.51 GAA, .878 save percentage) playoff run. Villalta has ideal size for a goaltender at 6-foot-4, but he had a wildly inconsistent season for Sault Ste. Marie. Already signed to an entry-level contract with Los Angeles, Villalta will turn pro for the 2019-20 season.
