Montreal reassigned Vejdemo to AHL Laval on Wednesday.
Vejdemo's demotion suggests Brendan Gallagher (concussion) is likely nearing a return to action. The 2015 third-round pick will return to a prominent role with Laval, where he's notched eight goals and 16 points in 30 games this campaign.
Vejdemo had two shots and one hit over 9:18 of ice time in Thursday's 2-1 loss to the Lightning.
Injuries to Montreal's forwards have created an opportunity for Vejdemo, who has skated on the fourth line the last two games. He made his NHL debut in Tuesday's loss to the Hurricanes, playing just 6:04 in that contest. His or Dale Weise's job will be the first to go as injured players return, but there's uncertainty as to when the Habs can expect that to occur.
Vejdemo was called up from AHL Laval on Saturday, Eric Engels of Sportsnet.ca reports.
Vejdemo will join the Canadiens after posting 16 points (eight goals, eight assists) in 30 contests with Laval. The Canadiens have been ravaged by injuries among their forwards, so Vejdemo will serve as extra depth and could challenge Ryan Barber and Ryan Poehling for playing time on the fourth line. In a corresponding move, defenseman Otto Leskinen was sent to the minors.
