  • Jan Kovar: Signs tryout with AHL club

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(10/18/18) Kovar agreed to terms on a professional tryout agreement with AHL Providence on Thursday, Mark Divver of The Providence Journal reports.

It's certainly a strange move for Kovar after he previously was released from his contract with the Islanders after refusing to report to AHL Bridgeport. Rather than still being on his NHL deal, the center will now have to earn his way into a minor-league only deal with the Providence Bruins.

    Jan Kovar: Waived unconditionally

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(10/10/18) Kovar was placed on unconditional waivers by the Islanders on Wednesday to terminate his contract.

After failing to make the team out of training camp, Kovar apparently decided against reporting to AHL Bridgeport. If he goes unclaimed, the center will likely return to the KHL, where he played the last five years. The 28-year-old's impressive numbers in Russia's top league saw the Isles give him a one-year, $2 million contract, but he failed to impress team brass during the preseason.

Islanders' Jan Kovar: Contemplating next move

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(10/5/18) Kovar has not reported to AHL Bridgeport, Brian Compton of NHL.com reports.

The Islanders put the wheels in motion to assign Kovar to that minor-league club Tuesday, but according to Arthur Staple of Newsday, the Czech prospect is "taking some time to figure out his next move." This situation reminds us of the Vadim Shipachayov saga with the Golden Knights last season, where the KHL star took issue with being assigned to the minors. In Shipachayov's case, he actually had to retire from the NHL in order for his contract to be terminated and be eligible to return to the KHL. We're not saying that's the route Kovar will take, but it's not a good look for either side at the moment.

Islanders' Jan Kovar: Assigned to minor league

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(10/2/18) Kovar was reassigned to AHL Bridgeport on Tuesday, Shannon Hogan of MSG Networks reports.

Even with elite centerman John Tavares leaving the Islanders for Toronto, Kovar failed to crack the Opening Night roster since the club will be able to stock that position with veterans in the top nine behind Mathew Barzal. Kovar did average above a point per game with Magnitogorsk of the KHL the past five seasons, so he'll be an intriguing fantasy option in the event of a call-up to the big stage.

    Islanders' Jan Kovar: Earns assist

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(9/17/18) Kovar tallied a helper in Sunday's preseason victory over Philadelphia.

The 28-year-old found the scoresheet in his first bit of NHL action. Kovar was absolutely a force in the KHL, amassing 286 points in 285 regular-season games to go along with 91 points in 83 playoff games. His sound two-way game could be relied upon to help fill the void of John Tavares' departure this offseason.
