  • Canadiens' Al Montoya: Possible increase in workload

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(7/23/17) Montoya could see an increase in his workload in the 2017-18 season, Steven Nechay of Canadiens.com reports.

Canadiens goaltending coach Steven Waite has expressed his trust in Montoya, saying, "We're not afraid to put Al in goal against any team in the league." This implies Montreal can use Montoya whenever starting goalie Carey Price needs rest, not just against weaker opponents. Montoya's increase in playing time will be limited however, as he will remain in a backup role to Price.

Canadiens' Al Montoya: Cleared for backup duty Saturday

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(4/8/17) Montoya (lower body) will back up Charlie Lindgren in Saturday's regular-season finale against the Red Wings, Arpon Basu of LNH.com reports.

Basu further relayed from coach Claude Julien that Montoya should be at full strength for the playoffs.

Canadiens' Al Montoya: Won't return Friday

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(4/7/17) Montoya (lower body) is not in the lineup for Friday night's home game against the Lightning.

While reports have foretold Montoya's imminent return, keep in mind that the Canadiens have already locked up the top spot in the Atlantic Division and there is no advantage in bringing back their secondary goalie before he is totally ready. This leaves Charlie Lindgren to back up Carey Price on Friday and it's possible that the young goalie could draw the start in Detroit on Saturday.

    Canadiens' Al Montoya: Return imminent

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(4/5/17) Montoya (lower body) is "really close" to returning, per Canadiens coach Claude Julien, Joe Yerdon of NHL.com reports.

Montoya has effectively been ruled out for Wednesday's road tilt with the Sabres, but there appears to be a chance that he'll be ready for a back-to-back set to cap off the regular season, starting with Friday's home game against the Lightning. Prior to his injury, he'd been starting about once every four or five games.

Canadiens' Al Montoya: Joins team in Florida

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(4/3/17) Montoya (lower body) met the team one game into its three-game road trip and practiced Monday.

The 2004 first-round pick was a late scratch for a start on March 28 and hadn't practiced since then. Despite this encouraging sign for Montoya and the Habs, Charlie Lindgren has been named as the starting netminder for Monday's matchup with the Panthers. With that in mind, Montoya will likely have to get some more practice time in before he's ready to return.
