R.J. Umberger: Cut from training camp
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Umberger was let go from his professional tryout agreement by the Stars on Wednesday.

Umberger is facing a second straight year watching the NHL from home after he was unable to land a gig for the 2016-17 campaign as well. With no teams calling -- and the 35-year-old seemingly unwilling to sign overseas -- it may be time for him to consider hanging up his skates.

Stars' R.J. Umberger: Signs professional tryout
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Umberger will join the Stars at training camp after agreeing to terms on a professional tryout agreement Friday, Aaron Portzline of The Columbus Dispatch reports.

Following the 2015-16 campaign, Umberger was bought out of his contract and failed to secure another gig. Dallas will give the former first-round pick a shot during training camp after he sat out all of last season. At his peak, the 35-year-old recorded 50-plus points three times, but also fell short of the 20-point threshold in each of his last two seasons. If the Stars think they can get at least 10 goals out of the Pittsburgh native, you have to think they will sign him to a one-year, league-minimum contract.

R.J. Umberger: Bought out by Philadelphia
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

As expected, Umberger was bought out by the Flyers and is now on the free-agent market.

Philadelphia will save $3 million in cap space by stretching out Umberger's contract through the buyout. The winger has been abysmal since being acquired by the Flyers via a trade, registering a paltry 26 points in two seasons with the Orange and Black. The market is certainly dwindling for the 34-year-old, but he may still find a landing spot on a young team looking for an established forward.

Flyers' R.J. Umberger: Facing contract buyout
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Umberger will be subjected to a contract buyout by the Flyers, Dave Isaac of the Courier-Post reports.

As indicated in the report, Umberger has a no-move clause which gives a player the right to decide whether he'll be placed on waivers as part of the buyout process. Umberger has been swimming in the dough thanks to his signing a five-year, $23 million extension with the Blue Jackets in 2011. He fell out of favor in Columbus and was traded to Philly almost two years ago -- along with a 2015 fourth-round pick -- in exchange for Scott Hartnell. But the 34-year-old was a colossal disappointment in the City of Brotherly Love, recording just 26 points in 106 games and struggling to rebound from a hip injury that required surgery, an issue with his foot, and a few more ailments. The Flyers' decision to buy out Umberger was a no-brainer since he only had one year remaining on that contract and the buyout includes $3 million in savings in 2016-17.

Flyers' R.J. Umberger: Posts rare multi-point game
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Umberger tallied two assists Tuesday in a 6-3 win over New Jersey.

Hey, look at that -- Umberger's put up two noteworthy efforts in the last four games, with the other one being the match against Buffalo in which he picked up his first goal of the year. It's nice to see, but we can't count on Umberger to keep finding the scoresheet; he's been absolutely atrocious from a fantasy perspective since arriving in Philadelphia last year, totaling 24 points in 103 games.

Flyers' R.J. Umberger: Finally removes monkey from back
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Umberger finally notched his first goal of the season Thursday, opening the scoring in a 5-1 victory over the Sabres.

Hey, welcome to the season, R.J. A healthy scratch for the last five games, Umberger's played career-low minutes even when he's been in the lineup this year, and the result has been a continuation of his precipitous decline. He certainly looked the part of a goal-scorer, getting into a prime scoring area and blasting a pass from Sam Gagner by a stunned Robin Lehner. It was his first point since Jan. 5, highlighting the rarity of Umberger's latter-day contributions.

Flyers' R.J. Umberger: Warming bench Tuesday
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Umberger will be a healthy scratch Tuesday night against the Canadiens, Sam Carchidi of the Philadelphia Inquirer reports.

As noted by Carchidi, Umberger hasn't scored in 50 consecutive games, plus he carried a nine-game pointless streak into the All-Star break. Perhaps his time on the pine will allow him to see the game from a different perspective and come back rejuvenated, but we're not holding our collective breath. Umberger has just nine goals in 99 games since his tenure with the Flyers started in 2014-15.

Flyers' R.J. Umberger: Struggling to produce on fourth line
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Umberger has just one point in the eleven games since his return from a foot injury in early December.

Age has perhaps caught up with the fourth-liner, as he's nowhere close to reproducing his 50-point seasons of yesteryear. In 22 games this season, he's produced just five assists and zero goals. His value is negligible in all but the deepest of formats.

Flyers' R.J. Umberger: Fully recovered from injury
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Umberger (foot) has fully recovered from his foot injury, Tim Panaccio of CSN Philadelphia reports.

The report also notes that, although Umberger is now healthy, he probably won't immediately draw into the Flyers' lineup, as head coach Dave Hakstol likely won't alter the formula that has led to three consecutive wins for Philadelphia. Once the 33-year-old winger does get the call, he will likely slot into the Flyers' lineup as a bottom-six forward.

Flyers' R.J. Umberger: Practices Monday
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Umberger (lower body) skated on a "fifth" line with Ryan White and Vincent Lecavalier during Monday's practice, Bill Meltzer of NHL.com reports.

Umberger looks to be nearing a return after skating on an actual line during practice on Monday. However, with that line being outside of the top-12 forward group, Umberger may not be inserted to the lineup right away when he receives the medical all-clear.

Flyers' R.J. Umberger: Out Monday
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Umberger (lower-body) still has about a week left to recover from his injury and will not play on Monday against the Hurricanes, Ray Moffo of 1360 WNJC reports.

Assuming Umberger will not return early, he will miss four additional games for the Flyers this week. His next chance to return will be next week Tuesday against the Senators. The 33-year-old veteran has totaled four points in 11 games this season.

Flyers' R.J. Umberger: Out Saturday
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Umberger (undisclosed) did not travel with the Flyers for Saturday's matchup with the Senators, Sam Carchidi of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports.

Umberger reportedly is dealing with an injury, the nature and severity of which has not been disclosed. His next chance to lace his skates for a game will be this coming Monday, when the Flyers host the Hurricanes.

Flyers' R.J. Umberger: Not ready yet
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Umberger (undisclosed) still isn't ready to rejoin the Flyers' lineup, Sam Carchidi of the Philadelphia Inquirer reports.

Umberger continues to recover from an undisclosed issue, but the news rules him out for Thursday's game against the Sharks. His timetable remains unclear, but with Thursday likely out the window, his next chance would come Saturday against the Senators.

Flyers' R.J. Umberger: Placed on injured reserve Saturday
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Umberger (undisclosed) was placed on injured reserve Saturday.

Umberger was given a 1-to-2 week recovery timetable Thursday, so it's hardly surprising that the Flyers have opted to place the veteran winger on injured reserve in order to open up a roster spot while he's sidelined.

Flyers' R.J. Umberger: Will miss next 1-2 weeks
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Umberger will be sidelined for 1-to-2 weeks with a lower-body injury.

Umberger missed Tuesday's tilt against the Avalanche with a lower-body injury, and is now expected to be sidelined for the next 1-to-2 weeks with the same ailment that appears to be far more serious than initially expected. At the very least, Umberger won't be ready to draw back into the Flyers' lineup until next Thursday's matchup with San Jose.

Flyers' R.J. Umberger: Misses third consecutive practice
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Umberger (undisclosed) missed Wednesday's practice, his third straight absence, Sam Carchidi of The Inquirer reports.

Umberger missed out on the Flyers last contest on Monday, as well. There is no indication of how long Umberger will be out, but he is unlikely to play Thursday against Washington after missing practice Wednesday.

Flyers' R.J. Umberger: Returns Wednesday
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Umberger (upper body) will return to the lineup Wednesday against the Bruins, Sam Carchidi of the Philadelphia Inquirer reports.

Umberger was expected to return Tuesday, but he instead received an extra day of rest and will rejoin the lineup Wednesday against the Bruins. He's expected to replace Sam Gagner in the lineup, likely serving on the third line alongside Scott Laughton and Brayden Schenn.

Flyers' R.J. Umberger: Likely out Tuesday
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Umberger (upper body) was not part of the Flyers' lines at practice Monday, making it unlikely that he will play Tuesday against the Stars, Sam Carchidi of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports.

Umberger was at practice Monday, but he was the extra on the fourth line. As a result it seems likely that he'll once again sit out Tuesday. Umberger said that he expected to return for Tuesday's contest initially, so it's possible he will simply be a healthy scratch. However, the Flyers do play again Wednesday, so it's possible the team will just give him an added rest day in preparation for a return Wednesday.

Flyers' R.J. Umberger: Could return Tuesday
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Umberger (upper body) expects to return for Tuesday's contest against the Stars, CSN Philadelphia reports.

Umberger has already missed two games with the ailment, but skated on his own Friday and was later able to be a partial participant in the team's practice. The Flyers have nearly a week off in between games, so the extended time off should help, but if he's unable to go Tuesday, Umberger could be back Wednesday against the Bruins.

Flyers' R.J. Umberger: To miss Wednesday's game with upper body injury
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Umberger (upper body) remains out for Wednesday's game against the Blackhawks, Bill Meltzer of HockeyBuzz.com reports.

Umberger missed Monday's game with the same injury and should once again be replaced by Sam Gagner in the lineup. He has two assists and a plus-1 rating in two games this season for the Flyers.
