Russell (concussion) was placed on injured reserve by the Oilers on Thursday.
It's unclear how Russell suffered the injury, but he will need to clear concussion protocol before returning to the ice. The 32-year-old has been a mainstay in the lineup for the Oilers, accumulating eight assists while averaging 17:01 of ice time in 43 games this campaign. His absence opens the door for Caleb Jones or recent call up William Lagesson to enter the lineup.
Russell picked up an assist, three blocked shots and two hits in Wednesday's 4-3 shootout loss to the Flames.
Russell has had an unusually strong run with four helpers in his last six games. The defenseman has eight assists, 93 blocked shots, 65 hits and 39 shots on goal in 49 appearances this season. Russell may not be a lock for the lineup going forward with Matt Benning back from a head injury. Coach Dave Tippett may want to get Caleb Jones into games, which would likely lead to Russell or Benning taking an occasional turn in the press box.
Russell posted a shorthanded assist in Saturday's 7-3 win over the Coyotes.
Russell has three helpers in his last five games, although this was his first special-teams point of the season. The defenseman has seven assists, 90 blocked shots, 63 hits and 38 shots on goal in 48 contests. Russell typically doesn't produce enough offense to warrant fantasy attention.
Russell posted an assist and two PIM in Thursday's 4-2 win over the Canadiens.
Russell skated only 11:46 in the game -- coach Dave Tippett likely wanted his top-four defensemen on the ice as the Oilers rallied. The 32-year-old blueliner has six assists, 89 blocked shots, 61 hits and 14 PIM through 45 contests. His increasingly limited role alongside youngster Caleb Jones makes Russell a non-factor in most fantasy formats.
Russell notched an assist in Monday's 6-4 win over the Maple Leafs.
Russell went 20 games between points, his last being an assist versus the Sharks on Nov. 19. The 32-year-old is hardly known for his offense -- Russell has only five helpers to go with 89 blocked shots, 60 hits and 12 PIM in 44 outings this season.
Russell has no points in his last 14 games.
Russell has amassed 25 blocked shots, 13 hits and a minus-6 rating in that span while serving on the third pairing. Russell hasn't skated more than 13 minutes in the last four outings -- the reduced role will keep the defenseman off the fantasy radar.
Russell (personal) will return to the lineup for Wednesday's matchup with Ottawa, Jack Michaels of the Oilers Radio Network reports.
Russell missed Sunday's clash with the Canucks while tending to a personal matter, but he'll be back in there Wednesday, skating alongside the recently recalled Joel Persson on the Oilers' bottom pairing. The stay-at-home defender has already racked up 42 hits and 63 blocked shots in 28 games this campaign.
Russell is away from the team after the birth of his child and won't play Sunday against the Canucks.
Russell should be ready to rejoin the team Wednesday against the Senators. Either Brandon Manning or Matt Benning are expected to take over on the bottom pairing in Russell's stead.
Russell picked up an assist in Tuesday's 5-2 win over the Sharks.
Russell's helper came on Jujhar Khaira's first-period tally. It's the fourth assist of the year for the defenseman, who has yet to score a goal of his own. Russell has added 53 blocked shots and 35 hits in 23 contests.
Russell picked up an assist and two shots on goal in Friday's 4-0 win over the Devils.
Russell set up Matt Benning for a shot in the second period which deflected off Gaetan Haas and into the cage. Russell has three assists, 41 blocked shots and 24 hits through 18 appearances this season. His usage is primarily on the third pairing when the Oilers' defense corps is healthy.
Russell picked up an assist, two hits and two blocked shots in Monday's 3-2 overtime loss to the Coyotes.
Russell now has two assists, 39 blocked shots and 22 hits through 16 appearances this season. He's likely to see third-pairing minutes, but Joel Persson was benched after a turnover in the second period, allowing Russell to log 20:06 in Monday's contest. If Persson is scratched at any point in time, Russell would be most likely to move up alongside Oscar Klefbom.
Russell skated alongside Matt Benning in Wednesday's 4-1 win over the Blue Jackets.
With Joel Persson returning from a concussion, Russell was bumped down to the third pairing. He had two shots on goal and a blocked shot in 15:33 during the contest. Russell has only one assist but 34 blocked shots in 14 games for the Oilers. His steady defensive presence will keep him in the lineup, but it won't be enough to roster the 32-year-old outside of deep fantasy formats.
Russell produced an assist and blocked eight shots in Wednesday's 6-3 win over the Flyers.
Russell's first point of the season was a primary assist on Connor McDavid's second-period goal. The veteran defenseman also did his part to reduce Mikko Koskinen's workload, although the goalie still faced 52 shots in the contest. Russell has blocked 19 shots in seven games this season, mostly on the third pairing. He's moonlighting alongside Oscar Klefbom on the second pair for now, though, while Joel Persson is out with a concussion.
Russell has 11 blocked shots and 11 hits through six games.
The veteran defenseman is still searching for his first point, but his primary purpose is to play defense. Russell had 185 blocked shots in 72 games last season to go with 16 points, and a similar output in 2019-20 would be expected if he can avoid serious injury.
Russell (concussion) is expected to make his preseason debut Tuesday against Arizona, Jason Gregor of OilersNation.com reports.
Russell has been sidelined by a concussion since Edmonton's training camp opened Sept. 13, but his presence in Tuesday's lineup confirms that he's no longer in the league's protocol. The shot-blocking master will occupy a bottom-four position while playing a key role on the Oilers' penalty-killing unit this season.
Russell (concussion) will be out for at least a week, Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal reports.
The defenseman picked up the injury while skating before camp opened this week. Russell will be in the concussion protocol for at least seven days. Head injuries can be tough to pinpoint a timeline for, so it's unclear when Russell will be able to join the Oilers on for practice.
Russell scored his third goal of the year in Sunday's 6-3 loss to the Golden Knights.
Russell also had three hits and two blocked shots in the contest. The blueliner has a goal and four assists in eight games in March, as well as 29 blocks (nine of which came in a 3-2 loss to the Maple Leafs on March 9). He can be worth a look in deep formats.
Russell picked up a helper while shorthanded in Saturday's 3-2 overtime win against the Coyotes.
The defenseman, who's known mostly for his defensive play, surprisingly only has three shorthanded points in his career. Russell is up to two goals and 13 assists in 61 appearances this year, although his primary stat of interest is his 167 blocked shots. In formats that don't count blocks, Russell can safely be avoided.
Russell notched two assists in Saturday's 4-0 win over the Blue Jackets.
Playing against the club that drafted him in the third round back in 2005, Russell put together his first multi-point effort since Nov. 13. The stay-at-home blueliner has only two goals and 13 points through 55 games, but he provides a little fantasy value in other categories -- he's got a plus-3 rating on a mediocre Oilers squad, and has added 143 blocked shots and 69 hits.
Russell scored a goal on his only shot and posted four hits in a 3-2 loss to the Coyotes on Saturday.
The 31-year-old defenseman hadn't posted a point since Dec. 7, but he missed nearly a month of action, so Russell really went five games without a point. Still, Russell had two assists and no goals in the previous 16 games prior to Saturday, so this was a big goal. The veteran has two goals and nine points in 35 games this season. Missing action has hurt his value, but Russell's numbers on a per-game basis are down across the board in 2018-19.
