Red Wings' Justin Abdelkader: Picks up slack
Abdelkader recorded an assist Tuesday, but the host Capitals easily prevailed over the Red Wings, 6-2.
Abdelkader has produced a point in every other game this month -- spanning seven contests. However, it will be difficult for the physical winger to finish at a half-point per game this season since he's starting a career-high 60.4 percent of his 5-on-5 shifts in the defensive zone. Abdelkader has five goals and six helpers through 32 games, but only one-fifth of his points have taken place on the man advantage.... See More ... See Less
Red Wings' Gustav Nyquist: Factors into both of team's goals
Nyquist found the back of the net to complement an assist in Tuesday's 6-2 road loss to the Capitals.
Despite being down five goals in the waning moments of the third period, the Wings were relentless on the forecheck, and Justin Abdelkader forced a turnover that led to a wide-open look for Nyquist, who potted his eighth goal of the season. The Swedish scoring winger is a valuable trade chip for Detroit, and the Original Six club can probably drive up its asking price for Gus since he's operating at a career-best pace of 0.87 points per game.... Red Wings' Jimmy Howard: Makes second straight appearance
Howard set aside nine of 10 shots in relief of a struggling Jonathan Bernier in Tuesday's 6-2 road loss to the Capitals.
Howard stole the show with a 42-save win over the Kings on Monday night, but Red Wings coach Jeff Blashill saw enough of spot starter Jonathan Bernier once he allowed his fifth goal in this latest contest, so it was right back to work for Howard. The only damage against Detroit's top netminder was a hat-trick-finishing tally from Alex Ovechkin off a one-timer with 10:27 remaining in the third period, though the Wings were in such a deep hole by the time Howard entered the game that he had virtually no chance of pulling off another victory.... Red Wings' Jonathan Bernier: Stomped by Capitals
Bernier permitted five goals on 15 shots in Tuesday's 6-2 road loss to the Capitals.
Making his third start in a four-game stretch, Bernier only lasted for 30:06 before getting the ol' heave-ho in favor of traditional starter Jimmy Howard. Wings coach Jeff Blashill kept Bernier in goal even after Alex Ovechkin struck twice in a row, but the ensuing power-play tally from T.J. Oshie prompted the switch to Howard. Detroit's primary backup falls to 4-8-0 to go along with unsightly rate stats, including a 3.66 GAA and .884 save percentage. Only use Bernier if you're desperate for help in goal.... See More ... Red Wings' Jonathan Bernier: Tending twine Tuesday
Bernier will defend the road net in Tuesday's game versus the Capitals, Tom Gulitti of NHL.com reports.
Bernier gets the start in the second half of back-to-back games. The veteran netminder hasn't performed up to standards lately, winning just one of his last five starts and posting a .876 save percentage and 3.06 GAA in that span. Fantasy owners that choose to start Bernier will assume plenty of risk, as the Capitals rank third in the league with 3.62 goals per game.... See More ... See Less
Red Wings' Brian Lashoff: Promoted to top level
The Red Wings recalled Lashoff from AHL Grand Rapids on Tuesday.
Lashoff has only appeared in six NHL contests over the past two seasons, so it wouldn't be surprising if he ends up being a healthy scratch for the duration of his stay with the big club. The 28-year-old blueliner has notched three assists in 17 AHL appearances this campaign.... See More ... See Less
Red Wings' Andreas Athanasiou: Helps Detroit prevail
Athanasiou recorded his third December point with an assist in Monday's 3-1 home win over the Kings.
Athanasiou has three helpers through six games this month, but the smooth operator actually failed to etch the scoresheet in four of those contests. While Double A is on pace for a career-high 55 points with six multi-point efforts on the season ledger, it's so tough to predict when he'll land in the scoring column. As a result, he's best served as a depth forward in fantasy.... See More ... See Less
Red Wings' Christoffer Ehn: Garners rare point in victory
Ehn set up defenseman Dennis Cholowski's short-side tally in Monday's 3-1 home win over the Kings.
The Kings had three skaters committed to Ehn as he weaved out of the neutral zone on an odd-man rush, and that caused the visitors to lose sight of Cholowski, who accepted Ehn's pass and went top shelf over the shoulder of Jonathan Quick. Best known as a solid line defender, Ehn only has two points through 16 games, so he can safely be ignored in all fantasy hockey formats.... See More ... See Less
Red Wings' Jacob De La Rose: Emerges with rare assist
De La Rose managed a secondary assist in Mondays 3-1 home win over the Kings.
Since joining the Red Wings on Oct. 17 -- he was claimed off waivers from Montreal -- De La Rose has mustered a goal and four helpers through 19 games. It's difficult to get too excited about a fourth-line center, but the 23-year-old has been a boon to Detroit's 15th-ranked penalty kill.... See More ... See Less
Red Wings' Thomas Vanek: Produces apple in commanding win
Vanek picked up an assist in Monday's 3-1 home win over the Kings.
This was just the second helper and point for Vanek through six December contests, as he continues to be an inconsistent offensive contributor. The Austrian was prominently featured in Detroit's offense in 2016-17 -- when Dylan Larkin experienced a sophomore slump -- though Vanek's been handling bottom-six minutes of late despite technically starting games on the second line.... Red Wings' Jimmy Howard: Frustrates Kings in latest start
Howard turned aside 42 of 43 shots Monday en route to a home win over the Kings.
Detroit's stalwart netminder endured the busiest outing he's seen all season, and perhaps no one saw this coming against the league's weakest offense. Kings captain Anze Kopitar spoiled Howard's shutout bid with 6:38 remaining in the third period, but the 34-year-old stood on his head and secured his 10th win of the season. There have been rumors that Howard could be traded to a contending team only to return to the Original Six franchise in the offseason, but Detroit still has playoff aspirations of its own, so it'll be interesting to see what happens by the next dealing deadline.... Red Wings' Dylan Larkin: Pilfers for point
Larkin cashed in on his 12th goal of the season Monday in a 3-1 home win over the Kings.
Kings defenseman Derek Forbort made a lazy pass that Larkin intercepted and turned into a goal to the delight of the fans at Little Caesars Arena, but not before dangling around 2016 Norris Trophy winner Drew Doughty. Larkin, who is up to 12 goals and 17 assists through 31 games, should have no trouble establishing a new career high in points by the time his fourth NHL campaign is in the books.... See More ... Red Wings' Frans Nielsen: Scoring pace picking up
Nielsen lit the lamp in Monday's 3-1 home win over the Kings.
Jonathan Quick denied Nielsen from close range, but the savvy pivot corraled his own rebound and made good on the second-chance attempt. It's been an odd season for Nielsen, as he produced 14 assists without scoring through the first two months of the season, but now has five goals without a single helper through six December contests.... Red Wings' Dennis Cholowski: Buries slick short-side goal
Cholowski produced his fifth career goal in Monday's 3-1 home win over the Kings.
For some inexplicable reason, the Kings had three defenders committed to stopping Christoffer Ehn, only for Cholowski to join the rush and wire a sharp-angled shot over the shoulder of Kings goalie Jonathan Quick. Cholowski, a rookie blueliner, snapped a six-game pointless streak with the goal, and there are still plenty of positives to glean from his production in the first half of the 2018-19 campaign, with his ridiculous 11.9 shooting percentage standing out the most.... Red Wings' Brian Lashoff: Sent down to AHL
Lashoff was reassigned to AHL Grand Rapids on Monday.
Lashoff didn't play in either game that the Wings played while he was up, which isn't the least bit surprising. The 28-year-old has played in six total NHL games over the last three seasons.... See More ... See Less
Red Wings' Trevor Daley: Officially off IR
Daley (lower body) was removed from the injured reserve list as expected Monday, per the NHL's media site.
No surprise here, as Daley had already said he planned to play earlier Monday. This was just a formality. The veteran will return from a five-game absence, and he has one goal and four assists in 21 games this season.... See More ... See Less
Red Wings' Jimmy Howard: Tending goal Monday
Howard will be the home netminder against the Kings on Monday.
Howard has an impressive .920 save percentage, but his GAA is a less-robust 2.77 on account of the fact the Red Wings have allowed 34.1 shots on net per game. This should be an easier day for the former Maine Black Bear, though. The Kings have only averaged 2.20 goals and 27.9 shots on goal per contest.... See More ... See Less
