They might have backed into the postseason, but it doesn't matter how you get there, just that you do. For Detroit, it's 25 straight seasons of making the playoffs. This streak is one of the more remarkable feats in pro sports, especially considering they're competing in a salary-cap league now.
The Red Wings have three games to try to collect as many points as possible to put away the Bruins and clinch a 25th consecutive playoff berth. Thursday vs. Boston could be for their season and their streak.
These are tense days in Hockeytown as the Wings continue to fight to run their playoff streak to 25 straight years. Detroit faces key games against the Flyers and Bruins in the final weeks of the season to try and control their fate.
Back-to-back wins will help ease some tension for the Red Wings, but they'll close out the season with several tough games. That April 6 matchup with the Flyers could have massive playoff implications.
Offensive concerns persist for this team as it finally got its first 20-goal scorer of the season in rookie Dylan Larkin. The Red Wings have a three-point cushion in the wild-card race, but they have two games left against the Flyers that will prove huge on keeping that spot.
The Wings have slipped a bit in recent weeks and are now two points ahead of the Flyers for the last wild-card spot in the East. Petr Mrazek has been the team's MVP, but he has been awfully shaky of late with a .907 save percentage in his last 12 starts.
The Red Wings mostly stood pat at the deadline and that made head coach Jeff Blashill very happy. They don't have one of the strongest rosters in the East, but they have enough organizational depth to compete. By the way, have you seen that Andreas Athanasiou goal against Dallas yet? Mercy.
The Wings have gone through a rather tough stretch of late. They've lost five of their last six and dropped all the way into wild-card position. The Atlantic race remains tight, though. Could GM Ken Holland find anything on the market that helps bolster the team?
The Wings have been up and down over the last several games, but Pavel Datsyuk has been hot. The veteran forward has 10 points over a six-game streak and is up to 34 in 42 games. Detroit, meanwhile, remains in second in the ever-competitive Atlantic.
The Wings recently picked up a pair of huge wins, including one over division front-runner Florida. Maybe one of these days goalie Petr Mrazek gets his due credit as a huge reason for their success. He is 20-10-4 with a stunning .933 save percentage.
Preseason Power Rankings
Detroit's top line may not have as easy a time scoring as it has early, but young additions Dylan Larkin and Teemu Pulkkinen have softened the blow of Pavel Datsyuk remaining on the shelf to start the season.
