The United States' efforts in the mixed 4x400 got off to a difficult start, as their preliminary victory came with something less desirable: a disqualification. Elija Godwin and Lynna Irby were caught passing the baton outside the designated zone during an exchange, causing the officials to disqualify the U.S. despite its win. USA Track & Field appealed the ruling and won, giving its mixed 4x400 team another shot at gold.
In the first ever Olympic 4x400 mixed relay final on Saturday, the U.S. team consisting of Trevor Stewart, Kendall Ellis, Kaylin Whitney, and Vernon Norwood earned the bronze medal, finishing third behind the gold medal winning team from Poland and the silver medal winning Dominican Republic team.
The women's 100-meters was a 1-2-3 sweep for Jamaica, as Elaine Thompson-Herah won with an Olympic record-setting time of 10.61. Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce finished second, followed by Shericka Jackson. Teahna Daniels was the highest finishing American in seventh. It's the fourth consecutive gold medal in the event for Jamaica. Fraser-Prycer took home gold in 2008 and 2012 and Thompson-Herah won gold in 2016.
The men's discus throw saw a 1-2 finish for Sweden, with Daniel Stahl winning the event with a throw of 68.90 meters on his second attempt. Fellow countryman Simon Pettersson finished second to earn silver, while Austria's Lukas Weishaidinger earned bronze honors.
Jamaica sweeps the Top 3 in the women's 100-meter final, with Elaine Thompson-Herah winning followed by Shelly Ann-Fraser Pryce and Shericka Jackson. Thompson's time of 10.61 is a new Olympic record.
This marks back-to-back gold medals for Thompson, as she also took gold in this event in Rio.
The United States earns bronze in the 4x400 meter Mixed Relay. This is USA Track & Field's first medal of the Tokyo Olympics.
