2020 Tokyo Olympics: Suni Lee wins women's gymnastics individual all-around gold for Team USA
While Simone Biles was out, Lee took the mantle for Team USA

For the fifth consecutive Summer Olympics, an American gymnast has won the women's gymnastics individual all-around. With Simone Biles widely regarded as the greatest gymnast of all-time heading into the 2020 Summer Games that's not a surprise, but after she pulled out of the event, citing mental heath concerns, Suni Lee etched her name among the U.S. legends that have taken gold at the Summer Games.
Biles took gold in 2016, Gabby Douglas won in 2012, Nastia Liukin won it all in 2008 and Carly Patterson started Team USA's streak back in 2004.
Joining Lee on the podium Rebecca Andrade from Brazil, who went into her final rotation -- floor exercise -- with an opportunity to win gold, but a couple of steps out of bounds on a tumbling pass cost her enough to wind up with silver; along with Angelina Melinkova representing the Russian Olympic Committee winning bronze. Andrade made history with the silver medal as the first Brazilian women's gymnast to ever medal in the individual all-around.
Lee's gold medal winning performance was highlighted by a 15.300 score on the uneven bars -- the highest score of any of the athletes in the all-around final. She also improved on her all-around score of 57.166 from qualifying, where she finished third behind Andrade and Biles.
While Lee would have been in the all-around final had Biles not taken herself out of the competition, the reigning Olympic champion and five-time world champion would have been the prohibitive favorite to take gold. Jade Carey, who replaced Biles in Team USA's second slot, finished in eighth place.
Lee's 2020 Tokyo Olympics aren't over just yet, as he has a chance to win two more gold medals at these Games. She'll be competing in the uneven bars final on Sunday morning before finishing with the balance beam finals on Tuesday morning.
