The U.S. women's national team squares off against Australia on Tuesday to close out their Olympic group play at Kashima Soccer Stadium in Japan. The USWNT enter the match in second place in Group G standings, level with Australia on three points, but ahead on goal differential. United States can finish the group in second place with a win or draw. The forgiving nature of the tournament means the USWNT is unlikely to miss qualifying for the quarterfinals even if they lose as two of the three third place teams advance from the group stages

USWNT: After a disastrous showing against Sweden where the team lost 3-0, head coach Vlatko Andonovski's side had a big bounce back performance against New Zealand, winning 6-1. It was a result with a big enough goal differential to put them in second place at the moment, and if USA wants to ensure a second place finish they'll need a win or draw against Australia. Team USA faces another tough opponent this time to close out their group, with both teams sporting strong wingbacks, look for Kelley O'Hara to possibly make a return to the starting lineup in this one.
Australia: The Matildas are coming off a 4-2 loss against Sweden and currently sit third in the group on goal differential. The team has several players who used to play in NWSL including star striker Sam Kerr who is still the all-time leading goal scorer in the American league despite playing overseas with Chelsea since 2019. The familiarity doesn't end there, as head coach Tony Gustavsson was the assistant coach for the USA from 2012 to 2019, and could give Matildas an added boost in tactics against the USWNT.
USA vs. Australia prediction
