Barcelona 3-0 Juventus: Messi and Co. punish Buffon, start Champions League with bang
Barcelona is perfect to begin the season
After an underwhelming preseason and losing Neymar to PSG, Barcelona wasn't considered heavy favorites to win the Spanish League or Champions League. Well, how does four wins out of four La Liga matches and kicking off the Champions League group stage with a 3-0 thrashing of Juventus sound? Pretty good for Lionel Messi and Co.
The Catalan club put on a clinic on Tuesday, rocking the Italians with a convincing result. Messi scored twice, finishing past Gianluigi Buffon for the first time in his career, building massive momentum moving forward.
It was all level for most of the first half with the teams going back and forth, missing some chances, but Messi got things going with a brilliant finish just before the half:
Then after Ivan Rakitic finished a loose ball from close to double the lead 56 minutes in. 13 minutes later, Messi then made it 3-0 with this fine hit:
The victory gives Barcelona three points to start the campaign, while Juventus sits on zero. The Italians will be more than fine though, with Olympiakos and Sporting Lisbon as the other competition in the group. As for Barca, this team looks awfully good so far.
Barca and Juve return to UCL play on Sept. 27, with Juve hosting Olympiakos and Barca going to Sporting.
